classic game thread - 22 posts TOTAL. these game threads have twice as many before the game even starts.

I've officially given up on Dempster. Unless he's pitching hurt, he's just proving last year and the beginning of this one were just an extended fluke. Yeah, I know the team is bad and his schedule has been all over the place, but he's looking beyond terrible at this point.

LOL

To be fair, Dempster was horrendous in 06.

No kidding. There was nothing that indicated that he'd be where he is now instead of just having a fluke seasons as a good closer in 2005 and a starter ruined by injury and surgery.

It is funny seeing that stuff after the fact.

i remember i posted a "ryan o'malley feelgood thread" after that game, partly because it was a really cool story, and partly because it was one of the few things to celebrate in a dark, horrid season.

Anyone who stuck with the team until the bitter end in 2006 knows the name of one of the bright spots that year, Ryan O'Malley

how many people really stuck with that team? i remember game threads that were 2 or 3 pages long, mostly fred doing play by play for himself. they were a complete waste of time to follow (except on rich hill days).

I'll say one thing, it was a lot less stressful to watch the team at the end of 2006. Losing was expected. If they won, it was gravy. But if they blew a 5 run lead, it wasn't really a big deal because you hated pretty much everyone on the roster.

Here's the O'Malley game thread..

When Howry should be in now, Lou will use him in a critical situation in the STL series

At least in that series the only way they can gain much ground is if they sweep.

I'd love to sweep them and put them completely out of contention for the division.

Is there ever a time that Howry SHOULD be in. Anyway, in the pre game interview, Lou was saying how he still has faith in Howry and will continue to pitch him.

So last time the cubs were 23 games over?

Probably 2004 sometime.

Didn't an ESPN announcer say that the other day was the first time they had been 21 games over (or whatever it was at the time) since 1969?

89. Last time they were 25 games over was 1984 I believe.

yeah you're right, they finished 1989 at 24 games over .500. the 1984 team was as much as 32 games over .500. it'd be nice to see this team do that :D

Probably, but they're idiots anyway.

I think they were 22 over going into that slide in late September in 2004.
