Marquis is at 100 pitches already.

Let Marshall pitch for a couple innings and hope he has a good outing. Maybe Lou will thinking about switching their roles.

Anyone who stuck with the team until the bitter end in 2006 knows the name of one of the bright spots that year, Ryan O'Malley

how many people really stuck with that team? i remember game threads that were 2 or 3 pages long, mostly fred doing play by play for himself. they were a complete waste of time to follow (except on rich hill days).

I'll say one thing, it was a lot less stressful to watch the team at the end of 2006. Losing was expected. If they won, it was gravy. But if they blew a 5 run lead, it wasn't really a big deal because you hated pretty much everyone on the roster.

classic game thread - 22 posts TOTAL. these game threads have twice as many before the game even starts.

and of course a classic cob lineup:

Pierre, CF

Fast Freddie, 2B

Ramirez, 3B

Murton, LF

Moore, 1B

Blanco, C

Coats, RF

Cedeno, SS

Mateo, P

Let him go 1 more inning.

Let him finish... Marquis moving up on the PAP list wouldn't be the end of the world

Hilarious. Dempter's a bum.

I've officially given up on Dempster. Unless he's pitching hurt, he's just proving last year and the beginning of this one were just an extended fluke. Yeah, I know the team is bad and his schedule has been all over the place, but he's looking beyond terrible at this point.

Dempster is really struggling. If he isn't injured, he needs to be gone in the offseason, not merely removed from the closer's role.

Who would've thought 2 years later he's a Cy Young candidate.

Mateo starting games. That brings back horrible memories.

yeah basically the length of game thread at the end of that year was:

rich hill starting: 5-7 pages

anyone else starting: 1-3 pages, depending on whether (a) fred is doing play by play, and (b) how many people stopped in to say "God this team sucks" or "isn't this damn season over yet"?

There were a few of us. Sometimes Fred's PBP was uninterrupted for entire pages, but we were there. Even if you didn't post obsessively in game threads doesn't mean you didn't follow the team on a day to day basis. Sure if just about anything came up, I would not watch the game and check the box later, but if I was home it was still always on. I was at work listening to the O'Malley game on the radio. The night before I managed to stay up until 12:45 to watch that 17 inning game (or whatever it was). We swept that series IIRC.

I watched a bunch of those games but like you, if anything came up I skipped the Cubs.

To be fair, Dempster was horrendous in 06.

I think it's funny that people were exited to see Theriot after how much people didn't like him to start the season. It was also interesting seeing another match up on there was Marmol vs Marquis. I remember Marmol starting and praying that he could learn to throw strikes because he was nasty.

Wow that thread (and lineup) are hilarious. And about half the posts are just mocking how lame of a gamethread it was. And 55 pitches through 6 IP for Harang? hahaa

yeah same here... if i was just bumming around at home i would follow the game, but if i had anything better to do (which wasn't difficult, given how atrocious that team was) i would just pretend the cubs didn't exist.

I know, I'm not picking on Mojo, just funny how things change

I'm going to assume the fans are cheering for Jimmy coming off the field, not for Marquis.

Okay, bar time. Happy Wednesday everyone!

Marquis pitched like a 5th starter today.
