Right now the 3 main candidates in my mind are Z, Lincecum and Webb

Aaron Cook is quietly having a good year. I think right now it would be Webb, but Z deserves one if he keeps pitching like he has.

I think Webb would get the nod over Haren in most writers minds because he'll probably finish with more wins and has the bigger name. Voloquez hasn't been as dominating and I expect him to tail off (not that I don't think he's a good pitcher - he is). Aaron Cook won't get enough pub.

NL VORP

Dan Haren - 45.8

Carlos Zambrano - 45.1

Tim Lincecum - 43.5

Tim Hudson (R.I.P.) - 37.5

Johan Santana - 37.2

Dempster's is 36.5

Who would have guessed that we'd get Johan production from freaking Dempster.

Carlos Zambrano has been so good at times this year that it's hard to believe he isn't really being talked about any more than usual. He's been kind of unbelievable.

We waited years to see Z figure out that throwing fewer balls would mean a jump up in production, and the results were possibly even better than we could've hoped. I think he will win the Cy Young this season.

Everyone loves him again now, but last year there were a lot on this board who were ready to let him walk. Thankfully Hendry didn't listen to them.

To be honest, I'm glad Hendry doesn't listen to alot of people on this board and really, any board.

And even Z (at one point last year after the Barrett incident some posters were calling for him to be traded).

Only the people who refused to admit that Barrett made the first move.

please don't let this stupid argument start up again. there was absolutely no way to tell what happened from that choppy youtube video.

neat. unless it was on of cubbiechris's 1000000p hds at 160 frames a second, there's no way of knowing who did what first and arguing otherwise is just looking for a pointless fight

Do you guys think Z could be a Hall of Famer?

He's probably going to finish this season with more than 100 career wins and he's only 28. If he wins 200+ games, keeps his ERA in the 3s and wins a world series with the cubs, I can't imagine the voters would keep him out.

But he's got a long way to go and he still has to stay healthy

If he stays healthy I think he has a chance. The start of his career reminds me of Maddux in the sense that they were both above average, on the verge of stardom for a few years before finally having a big breakthrough year (1992 for Maddux, this year for Zambrano). Maddux kept building on that; if Z can do the same the sky's the limit.

I think in about 5 years or so, 200-250 wins is going to become the new 300 as far as wins are concerned for HOF acceptance. There's talk that unless Mike Mussina reaches 300, that no one will ever reach 300 wins again. I think that may be a stretch, but it's feasible. That's probably the first thing they'll look at is win total, then strikeouts, then ERA. The first few years are going to be tough on pitchers who were really good but didn't have the wins or the awards, and I think after they realize that there's really not gonna be another 300 win 3000 K pitcher, they're going to ease up on the typical pitcher requirements. By the time Z is done, this may be one of the key reasons why he would be easily accepted.

But that's just how I see it

his ERA wasn't great in 1991 but he was already trending toward being awesome at that point. his whip was down to 1.13. unless he really makes a quantum leap, zambrano will never have good enough control to stack up with the peak that maddux had.
