I don't think this is a big deal. Wuertz was going to be available for Saturday and Sunday at the max, and his usage is out of whack and he's coming off an awful outing. With the All-Star break it buys several days towards the 10 until Wuertz can come back. Mike goes down to Iowa, gets regular usage for a week, and if he's doing alright he comes back up. If Hart is no good, you can always replace him with Marshall when he leaves the rotation after the break, Ascanio from Iowa, or Eyre when he comes back shortly after the break.

That sounds logical. I'd like to see Wuertz get 3 games in a week to get a better feel again before he comes up and I think he'll be fine down there...do well and be in a good groove when he's called up.

It sounds logical until you remember the AAA all star game is wednesday, so he's not going to get a chance for regular work anytime soon.

Yeah but he can rest up think about what he did wrong while he sits in the corner.

What do you think he's been doing in the Cubs bullpen the last couple of weeks?

Too much chatting with the fans. A little solitude will help him become one with the game, makes a man think about life and the direction it's heading.

I bet Wuertz is down til an injury or September. It was gonna be him once Eyre came up anyway, now Hart or Marshall will go down when we get rid of the assinine 13 man staff, and the other will go when Eyre comes back.

Wuertz was struggling, but I dont see Hart doing any better.

We have other relievers who have been stuggling worse and for a far longer stretch than Wuertz.

In any case, if any pitcher was to be sent down, it should have been for a bat for the bench, not another pitcher who may or not be any more or less effective than the one sent down.

Lou might be trying to give him the weekend off and with the break coming up he can get an extended rest. Hart is just a weekend stop gag is my guess.

I doubt it, I think SSR is right on in his guess.

Wuertz? He's had plenty of weekends off, and weekdays, and extended rest.

Wow, that's all that I can say. You don't use a guy for a week and you expect him to come in and be lights out. he needs to stop using Marmol, Howry and Wood and get the others involved for once.

this sucks...Kevin Hart is pure trash..why do the Cubs keep trying to pawn this guy off as a viable MLB reliever.

I wouldn't go as so far as calling Hart trash but Wuertz is better and proven.

Lou is bullpen-[expletive].

"WHAT?!?! YOU LOOK LIKE ISHT AFTER YOU BARELY GET ANY PITCHING TIME!?! DOWN YOU GO!!!"

But he continues to rack up the innings for Howry who has been getting hit harder than Brett Myers wife.

Aaaaaaaand, quoted

This whole "Wuertz never gets used" thing is something of a myth, or at the very least waaaaayyyyy overblown. He has 37 appearances on the year. Compare that to Howry, who has 43 appearances. And considering that we're about 15 weeks into the baseball season now, that means that over the course of about 2 and a half weeks, Howry is getting into a game about once more than Wuertz. And 37 appearances in 92 games (roughly 40% of games) hardly qualifies as letting him "rot" on the bench.

Look at his gamelogs and look at how much time there is between appearances in the month of June. There is a 10 day rest, then a 4 days rest following the 1 appearance, then he pitched in 2 consecutive games, then there is a 6 day rest followed by 2 appearances, then a 4 days rest, then pitched in 1 game. He then sits 7 days leading up to yesterdays game. Shouldnt be surprising that he wouldnt have his best stuff after a 7 day rest dont you think? Weurtz hasnt pitched in a role, and has sat for long periods of time this year. Even though hes been putting up better numbers than Bob Howry, whos longest stretch of not pitching was 5 games back in April and May.

Eyre comes back, Marshall goes down. Soriano comes back, Hart goes down. Both those things happen most likely within the next 6 games so I really don't see the big deal about Wuertz going down now instead of right after the ASB.

Or maybe we should keep Wuertz around and DFA Marquis like a bunch of people have suggested recently. Since Marquis is such a useless starter. Oh, wait......

Everyone here assumes that it is Lou but it could just as likely be a nagging injury, Hart's potential to pitch more innings, or the fact that righties are batting .292 against him.

Funny how you dont mention what lefties are hitting against Wuertz. And if it was a nagging injury then put him on the DL, you dont send him to AAA to continue pitching. And why would Hart being able to throw more innings mean anything? We already have 3 long men in the bullpen. Wuertz is and has been a better option than Kevin Hart.

I would agree that Wuertz is a better option overall, but neither one was going to pitch this weekend unless an emergency happened, and Hart is a fresher option for such an emergency. He'll be sent right back down over the break for Eyre.

It will be interesting what the Cubs plan to do about this pitching situation though. They want Harden to get the extra day as much as possible, and even skip some of his starts. So I imagine they'll want Marshall to take a turn or two in the rotation occasionally in order to push Harden back. Do they keep Marshall on the major league roster for that purpose?

Do they play the shuttle with him and two relievers? Since each reliever has to stay down for 10 days, they would need at least 2 to do the shuttle correctly. They could bring Marshall up and send reliever 1 down. Then after that game, they send Marshall right back down and bring reliever 2 up. 10 days later, Marshall comes back and starts again, replacing reliever 2. Then after the game, reliever 1 comes back and replaces Marshall.

I don't think they know yet what they're planning to do though.

Harts fresher than Wuertz? Wuertz just had 7 days off going into Thursdays home run derby, Im not sure how Hart is fresher than Wuertz when Hart has been starting and throwing alot more pitches. Also Wuertz is alot more acclimated to pitching out of the pen than Kevin Hart.

Like you said though, it will be interesting to see how they handle the pitching situation. Personally I want Marshall back at AAA when Eyre comes back so he can stay stretched out in case of an injury, or a Marquis implosion.
