Late to the party, but mad props to Hendry on getting this done while only giving up one useful piece in the organization.

I wonder what Buster Olney must be thinking right now after that blog this morning.

The wide chick on ESPN News called him out on it earlier and he said that in the article he mentioned that the cubs aren't going to get anyone without question marks and that Harden definitely has question marks in his injury history.

So basically he refused to say he was wrong.

I know everyones talking about how the hell did we get Harden so cheap when the As wanted a Harenesque package, but heres my take: did anyone actually here Beane say he wanted such a package? Did anyone here Beane ask for 2 top 50 prospects? It was probably all just rumors, and a deal may have been in the works for a while now, and Hendry just decided to speed things up.

Olney talked about how this literally came together in a day, evidently not thinking anyone outside of Chicago would be able to hear Hendry say this was worked on for a month and got serious in the last 10 days.

He also talked about how this is a risky move for the Cubs. He's got serious egg on his face right now, at any rate.

The wide girl totally called him out on that too. I believe they actually broadcasted the Hendry press conference a few minutes before Olney said that and he was like "but, but, I didn't hear anything about it! And no one else did either!"

Its pretty ridiculous that the media doesn't believe that anything can happen without them hearing about it.

So, is there any type of pitch count or anything on harden?

I love the trade especially since all we gave up is a future #3 starter at best and a bunch of guys we dont need.

He threw 95 pitches each of the last two times out. I'm guessing he might be on a leash of around 100, especially in July.

He was on a 90-100 pitch count by the A's.

It's interesting how Oakland handled him. Harden threw 90 pitches in his first start back, followed by 102, 105, 100, and 115. Since then, he has averaged 95 pitches with no appearances fewer than 91 pitches and none more than 99.

100 may be an arbitrary mark, but we'll see if that continues with the Cubs. 115 seems unnecessary.

all these pitch counts reminds me of dare i say it (prior and wood). but i guess thats what we will have to live with. I just hope he stays healthy and doesnt remind me of those 2 again.

Personally, I like the idea that the Cubs organization must have decided that this is the year and the team to GO FOR IT. I know everyone's saying the same thing, but I'll echo it again - if Harden can stay healthy for the rest of this season and we end up winning it all, I couldn't care less if Murton, Gallagher, Patterson and Donaldson all end up playing at the big league level - it would be worth it.

Sometimes you really just have to take a gamble.

Harden has filthy stuff and it can only help moving to the NL where he gets to generally face a softer 7-9 spot in the lineup.

I also really like the fact that we still have some other chips left if we want to go out and find a hitter.

Can't help but be optimistic about this deal - I give Hendry a tip of the cap for making the move - for better or for worse, the deal right now today looks to be in the Cubs favor.

I don't see Harden ever approaching Prior in 03 territory:

30 appearances on the season

only 4 under 100 pitches

19 over 110

9 over 120

3 over 130

His last 3 starts of the 03 regular season were 123, 131, and 133. I think anything under 110 will be fine with Harden, but preferably keep it around 100.

So in other words, hes fragile? Not that im shocked, its a risk we all know about.

Dempster on the Harden acquisition: "Finally, someone who speaks my language. We're gonna set up some hockey nets in the clubhouse". :D

I don't know if this was mentioned.

Gallagher, 22, is expected to start for Oakland on Friday against the Angels. Patterson, 25, and Murton, 26, will report to Triple-A Sacramento. Donaldson, 22, will be assigned to Class A Stockton or Double-A Midland.

I'm a bit surprised they're not bringing Murton to the mlb club.

At least Gallagher got to get his booze on his last weekend as a Cub (these were taken at Jim Edmonds' bar/restaurant here in St. Louis)

I just saw that Harden has had a 0.68 ERA against the N.L. this year. Granted its a small sample size, but its something to get really excited about (not that we need to get any more excited about this deal).

Well consider me firmly a Jim Hendry fan now. To get Harden (and Gaudin) without giving up Pie or Hill is quite amazing.

This is so awesome. We finally have pitching depth, good pitching depth. Should be a fun final few months to this season.

A Harden deal makes so much more sense than a Wolf/Maddux type deal. Especially considering we get Gaudin as well. We had and now have even more of a very deep rotation with quite a few back up options. After Sabathia, Harden was the only true difference maker available. Hudson and Burnett are difference makers, but to a lesser degree. Harden has the obvious injury concern and that was reflected in the bounty that he pulled in vs what Sabathia did. But the point is, that the marginal upgrade of Harden over Gallagher/Marshall is extremely large, and if Harden gets injured there are a plethora (Marshall, Gaudin, Lieber, etc) of guys that can step into his spot and put up league average numbers. Wolf/Maddux are safer bets but really won't be that much of a marginal upgrade over Gallagher/Marshall.

Donaldson is getting promoted. I find that surprising.
