I actually think Wood did the job after walking the first batter. He had Molina struck out, but didn't get the call. That non-call changed the whole inning.

Does he have to battle through it....sure. And he almost did.

He hasn't blown a save and the Cubs haven't lost a game he's pitched in since may 24. Closer give one away once in awhile.

Everybody....come off the ledge!

Seriously. It's a tough loss, but not the end of the world. I'm confident the Cubs can hit a struggling Wellemeyer. Marmol was great today. Lilly was pretty good. Aramis finally did something. Lee stayed hot. Derosa stayed hot. Cotts was good. Wood won't blow many save chances, especially ones with a 2-run lead.

Will everyone agree it is time to worry when we go 2-4 the next 6 games? Hell we could be looking at a 2-7 finish if you look at the starting pitcher match ups.

which would be extremely stupid, since the cubs have been very very very good at home and have a much better offense than the giants and pirates.

We play the Reds. Oh and we can't hit Cueto, Volquez, Cain, and Lincecum. Or at least haven't yet.

He, I meant 2-6 not 2-7.

FYI, Cubs will miss Volquez. He pitches tomorrow, then again on Friday. Harang, Cueto and Arroyo will pitch. Cubs also got 6 hits and 3 ERs off Cueto in 6 innings the only time they faced him. They faced him w/o Ramirez or Edmonds, though with Soriano. The Cubs also miss Lincecum unless the Giants change their rotation with the day off Monday. Lincecum is slated to pitch Wednesday vs. the Mets. I don't see any reason why a team that's going nowhere would want their best young pitcher to pitch extra if he doesn't have to.

which we almost got, were it not for a Fontenot homer. Maybe, it is time to re-evaluate just how good this team really is.

And we might have swept if Theriot got a hit on Tuesday night and Marmol didn't give up a 3 run HR on Thursday.

A sign somebody has to come off the ledge.

So at what point should we start to worry about the other teams in the division? Once they have passed us?

Don't look at me, I've been well documented as worried about the Brewers since they were about 9 games out of first.

volquez hasn't pitched well lately and the cubs have a 1.50 WHIP against him. their "not being able to hit against him" is more a function of "not hitting with guys on base against him"

cueto gave up 3 runs in 6 innings against the cubs. OMG he owns us!!!!!11!!!!111!!

cain had really good stuff against the cubs last time out, but his career ERA against the cubs is 3.29. good but not great.

the giants have a terrible offense; the pirates' offense is average at best.

and most importantly, the games are being played IN WRIGLEY, where the cubs are 33-10.

really, it blows my mind how much people can see the negative in everything. if you can't enjoy this year's cub team, then you pretty much aren't going to enjoy baseball ever.

I thought that their announcers said they would skip him up to get him one more start before the break.

I am enjoying it, but still how devastating would it be for us to finish out of the playoff picture, which could easily happen since once again the Cardinals are over acheiving.

todd wellemeyer cant throw more than 5 innings and has given up 14 runs in his last 19 innings. we arent losing tomorrow.

True, he's looked pretty bad as of late. We'll see if he can even get through 5 innings without getting injured again.

You probably should start to worry about the Cardinals too. They have hung through half a season.

Nah. I'd bet my house that the Cardinals don't make the playoffs.

What happened to everyone pointing out the Brewers pythag record as reasons why they aren't a threat?

They had a hot start. They've been a game over 500 since.

I'm assuming May 30th is your reference point.

Record since May 30th:

Cardinals 17-16

Cubs 18-15

Brewers 19-11

Just saying

if you really think there's a decent chance that the cubs will go into the all star break on a 2-8 skid, you'd probably be better served by just not being a sports fan any more.

why ruin the fun for the guys who must be a joy to be around

Seriously, what a devastating loss. I fully expect us to get blownout tomorrow and go on some kind of skid.

ally give the Cubs wins because those teams are so bad. Also, I'm pretty sure we'll see Harang, Cueto, and Volquez in the Reds series.

and Cain and Lincecum in the next one. Plus we have that horrible finish to the year. I don't get the false confidence some are showing.

That confidence comes from having the best record in the NL.

Using the completely arbitrary point of May 6. Since then:

Cubs: 33-22, .600

Cards: 28-27, .509

At that pace for the rest of the season:

Cubs: 96-66

Cards: 87-75

That's the one.

This was a crappy lose, but every team has those over the course of the season. And I am fully confident that Marshall's Law will be implimented in St. Louis tomorrow. I fully expect Marshall to putpitched Welly by a great distance.

Here's why we will tomorrow, and carry that momentum into next week:

So far in this series, the Cards have managed only 11 hits and 2 ERs in 12 IPs against Z/Lilly. In this series the Cards have managed 2 hits and 1 run against the Cubs bullpen, not including KW implosion today. The Cubs have outplayed the Cards this series, but due to a break the Cards got in 9th today, they managed to split the series so far. The Cubs have not lead/tied for all of one innings, and that was the ninth. The Cubs have been the better team this series, an unfortunate break happen. We got our break int he first game, with those two questionable strike calls against Glaus, and in turn karma gave the Cards a break today.

So, I get the negativity after today's game, but this isn't going to send the Cubs into a spiral, or skid, or whatnot. It's a bad loss nothing more/nothing less. I expect a nice and easy win tomorrow, something like 8-1.

so im loaded with cub jersey in buschtown tonite. when i hear smack, i congratulate them on wildcard position. i may get beat down.

go cubs!

Was this in response to me? Because mine was in response to SSR pointing out that since their hot start the Cardinals are just one game over .500. I simply found the Cubs record during that same time.

That game was crushing to watch.

Just got back a bit ago.

The best heckle I heard was on the way home from a teenage girl, "Go back to Chicago!"

I muttered back, "well, I can't."

I don't know if this has been talked about, but do you think that Edmonds should have bowled over Molina to try to score in the 8th? Later he called Molina "the best catcher in baseball" which shows Edmonds' fondness of him. Friends don't knock over other friends?
