If you poke a sleeping bear and it wakes up and eats you, the bear did it but it's your fault.

I have no words. I won't look at a sleeping bear the same way ever again.

Rich Hill is back on the DL with back spasms.

Link.

Left-hander Rich Hill, whose seasonlong struggle with command extended through the end of July at Class A Daytona, has headed back to the minor-league DL after a recurrence of the back spasms that sidelined him earlier this season. After walking 18 in 19 2/3 innings with the Cubs, Hill was a combined 4-7 with a 5.85 ERA, 57 strikeouts and 44 walks in 47 2/3 innings for Iowa, rookie-A Mesa and Daytona.

Ugh, it's getting to the point where he might never come back.

I question whether Hill will even be ready to start for the big league club next year. Imagine how good this team would be if Hill replicated his production from last year.

Harden

Hill

Dempster

Lilly

Would that be one of the top rotations in history?

And to that end, Trib hints that it may be the end of Hill's year. Not that it's any great shock with him going on the DL. I suppose the plan will be to work with him over the winter, put him in the mix for the back end of the rotation next spring, and hope for the best. [/sigh]

Indeed, but I wouldn't be so sure the Cubs would have pulled the trigger on Harden if Hill were replicating last year.

Assuming for a moment that Rich Hill does turn things around and pitches well enough for the majors next year, how has this season affected his service time with regards to arbitration and free agency.

If the Cubs can pull off a 95-win season without him, and still get him back plus another year of cheap service time, that could be pretty sweet.

It's kind of amazing that we are on pace to be around a 95 win team considering the total implosion our #2 pitcher pulled this year. If you told me that Hill was going to go away early in the year and never go back before the season started, I wouldn't believe we'd be looking like a 95+ win team.

Yep, he accrued next to no service time as all his DL stints have been in the minors. This will push him back a season.

I guess my questions are specifically:

Does he have anymore options?

When does he hit arbitration? (it looks like he has a little less than 2 years major league service time)

When does he hit free agency?

This is all off the top of my head, so somebody else can feel free to correct me.

This is his 3rd option year, which I'm unsure on, gun to my head I'd say that's his last option.

He won't hit arbitration until '10.

He wouldn't be a free agent until after the '12 season.

If Hill was in the rotation all year Gallagher would not have gotten the ML experience that made him such an attractive bargaining chip. THus no deal

Well, no deal the same way that it went down anyway.

You can add biceps tendonitis to Rich Hill's problems.

They are just now finding this?

It's just now coming out in the media - it could have been the real reason he was DL'ed at Daytona or it could have just turned up in the last few days.
