I really wanted to talk about our actual top 10 prospects, but then I got past "1. Josh Vitters" and I started jabbing pens into my face, so instead lets talk about something intentionally depressing

I'm thinking of guys like David Kelton (the FUTURE at third. Finally someone to replace Santo), Bobby Hill (the FUTURE at second base. Our leadoff hitter for the next decade), Juan Cruz (UNTOUCHABLE, the next Pedro) and Nic Jackson (so much upside he gives me vertigo), but I'm sure there are more. If we had to make a top-10 list of our most overrated prospects of the last eight years, how would you set it up?

I didnt really start paying much attention to what was going on in the minors until the past few years, probably '03-'04 ish when I became intrigued by the Angel Guzman hype and became obsessed with it. in no order, here are some name that I remember hearing about who did nothing

David Kelton

Jason DuBois

the 2000 1st round pick Luis?

Ryan Harvey

Richard Lewis

Nic Jackson

Bobby Hill

Bobby Brownlie

of course theres Gary Scott and Kevin Orie

Hopefully, Felix Pie, Angel Guzman, and Rich Hill dont end up in this group

Luis Montanez.

I think Chadd Blasko and Luke Hagerty also deserve consideration for this list.

(Brendan) Harris didn't live up to the billing that Baseball Prospectus laid on him with the Albert Pujols comparisons.

Remember when Justin Jones had like a 13.00 K/9 as a 19 year old lefty in Low A and he felled trees with one chop of his bare hand?

Or Corey Patterson who was as hyped nearly as much as Delmon Young? Or when PECOTA projected Hee Seop Choi to have 150 walks and 50 HRs?

2 out of the top 10 in the big leagues.

Wow. Thats like looking at your high school yearbook and realising that all your old friends are working at Chilis or Walmart aside from a few.

Or married to your ex girlfriend. Wellemeyer, Todd.

And if you look down towards the bottom we've got Theriot and Cedeno in the "next 10" and Marmol, Soto, and Hoffpauir in the rest of the list.

I always like Alfredo Francisco and was pretty sad when he left the system.

Since we're now going back beyond 8 years, Jayson Peterson. I would have mentioned Griffin and Cunningham earlier myself if I realized we were now going back further. :D

DuBois wasn't a highly regarded prospect was he? I always saw him as better than Todd Hollinsworth.

I didn't pay attention to prospects until I found this place so my list is confined and short

Bobby Hill

Hee Sop Choi

Brian Dopirak

Ryan Harvey

Current Contender:

Jeff "jump the Shark" Samardzija

http://www.jeff-samardzija.com/ (Don't skip the Intro. The eyes, they pierce. He so dreamy)

He's probably the most over-hyped Cub prospect I've ever known, which isn't saying much.

Brian Dopirak. I remember after his monster year they compared it to the ML sluggers who were in the same league at some point (Pujols, Dunn) and he destroyed both their totals.

Then next year he realized "Hey, I'm not this good" and has sucked ever since. That was unfortunate.

I forgot about Dopirek. Where is he now?

Putting up a fairly decent line with Toronto's High-A team.

Dubois was rated pretty highly.

Patterson, Dubois, and Choi get my votes.

Funny story about Kelton. Back in the yr he was senior, by HS decided to schedule a 3 team tournment, just near the border of Alabama/Georgia. Troupe and Newton are considered GA 5A, would be Alabama's 6A. To say we got our butts handed to us (17-2, and 22-7) is a pretty fair description. But anyways, I was a junior on the JV team (yeah, I pretty much sucked, but oh well), and our "brilliant" coach, knew we would be getting our butts spanked, so intead of risking his "star pitchers" he ask for myself, and two other JV pitchers to join the varsity team. To make a story short, I came in about the 5 inning of the 1st game again Kelton's team, and guess who the first batter I got to face...............David Kelton (and in a previous AB, he had crushed one for a 3 run blast). So my first pitch to him, was a "fastball" ( I loosely use the term fastball, because I could throw harder then a new born baby) that hit him in the back. And the next thing I knew, I saw him smiling and shaking his head. It didn't hurt him, is what more of a "can I stay up to hit, instead of the HBP" smile. After the game I caught up to him, and apologize for hitting him, and he said, "no problem, I won't even leave a bruise."

Later the weekend, my HS team won the Tallassee Tournment. But the chance to pitch against Kelton was a pretty goo dmoment for me in HS.

I think you're misremembering. He was a 14th round draft choice out of college and didn't make it to the bigs until he was 25 (played 20 games). The year before he was in Iowa he hit .269/352/.458 in Jackson. That 2004 link had him as the 14 rated prospect by Tim.

I think that fact that so many people wanted him to play instead of Hollinsworth is clouding your judgement. It turns out that Dubois wasn't that good. I will go to my grave thinking that he was better than Todd by the time 2005 rolled around. But those were dark Dusty days. Days I like to forget.

Much sadness at seeing Harvey's name and remembering in '04 at Fitch Park watching him jack like 10,000 balls over the fence and being amazed.

Why you let me down big guy?

because they don't throw breaking balls during batting practice.

Oh, Jeff Goldbach. I saw him play in high school (he was like 5 years ahead of me). The next time I saw him play was like 5 or 6 years later for the Evansville Otters in the Frontier League. Trust me it could have happened to a nicer guy.
