Thats fine, Fontenot still seems to be taking the place of the useless light hitting stupid middle infielder. Its nice to only have one instead of several, but still, how about none?

not realistic. if you're going to have a backup middle infielder, he's almost certain to be a lousy hitter. take a look around baseball and see how many teams have a solid hitter who can come off the bench and play shortstop. if the guy can hit and play SS/2B, he's already starting.

When did we get rid of Cedeno?

Teams rarely carry just one backup middle infielder. It leaves you too handcuffed in the people you can pinch-hit for, double switches, injuries, etc.

Now the fact that Patterson is up and could switch to 2nd base if need be is a decent argument. It seems like the Cubs don't want to do that unless they absolutely need to through.

But even if you said that Hoffpauir was definitely a better hitter than Fontenot, when is he going to play? They don't seem to trust him in the OF. He's not going to get many pinch-hitting appearances because he's both behind Ward on the depth chart for LH pinch-hitters, and the Cubs won't send him up there to bat against a left-hander. He'll come up, and he'll just sit on the bench and likely get burned in a 2 pinch-hitter move as often as he actually gets an at-bat. It's a bad use of resources.

So you bring him up, stash Patterson or Murton in the minors and give as many opportunities as we can. Hopefully, he comes through, and can gain some trade value.

Some opportunities where? Because the Cubs aren't going to start him in the OF on a regular basis. They made that pretty clear with how they made the lineups the last couple of weeks.

And I really doubt that a 28 year old 1B who can play some OF is going to gain a lot of trade value just because he plays well for a couple of weeks. At best, if he does reasonably well, he'll bounce around the league as a poor man's Daryle Ward, who is a nice player to have but not one with a lot of trade value.

Oh crap why is Marquis pitching tomorrow? I thought it was Gallagher's turn, why are we skipping him for MARQUIS

Gallagher goes Friday. It's a good way to keep his innings number slightly down to move him back a couple days in certain situations like this. He's still very young. It's not great to have him throwing too many innings, and the Cubs may need him to stay in the rotation the rest of the year.

I'm hoping those two can keep it rolling the next two days. They really have been pitching well in June.

That looks like a bad series.

I missed the game tonight, so how did Marmol look? I see he had 2 K's. That's gotta be a good sign that he's getting his mojo back.

It does look like it favors the home team, but it's a hitters park and I fully expect our offense to give them a nice little cushion to work with.

Doesn't look all that bad to me...

I thought Marshall pitched better than he looked last night. Somehow the O's were managing to score every single baserunner that they got.

I'm a little late to the party, and I feel really dirty for saying this, but I LOVE JIM EDMONDS!!

He's been great so far for us.

It would appear that he thinks everything on the site must be baseball related ot it's out of line. Which, if you pay attention, is clearly the case.

I believe I'm also the 1st person to ever have their kid in their avatar. (Or maybe not if you check the game thread starter from the 4 before today)

Why? I feel confident in both Demp and Gallagher, and Marshall didn't even pitch that poorly yesterday.

I'm fine with it.

Here's an amusing excerpt from Goat Riders, who had one of their writers sit by the bullpen last night.

-As soon as we walked up to our seats, Sean Gallagher was coming out of the dugout and talking to Strode about something. I didn’t really catch what they were saying until Gallagher said, “And I was I like, ‘Hey, Lou...’ (curls up fist, extends thumb from said fist and presumably pretends to shove it up one of Lou’s bodily openings).” I can only assume the Gallagher was kicked out of the dugout and exiled to the bullpen by Lou for whatever reason, which he was clearly not happy about. Needless to say, it was hilarious.

-No one sits within a seat on either side of Carlos Marmol. I have never seen a more intense person in my life. I’m not sure if he was upset for any particular reason but when a child happened to catch his attention and wave at him, Marmol starred at him with fury and intensity before waving back with the same murderous look on his face. I honestly feared for my life.

-Between innings, Sean Gallagher and Scott Eyre would fling pumpkin seeds as the ushers who were monitoring the crowd from the field. Eyre was a sniper with the seeds while Gallagher missed so badly that it went backwards into the crowd and hit my friend. Eventually, Gallagher started shooting seeds at random people in the crowd when they weren’t looking. He might be my new favorite Cub.

-At the end of the game, bullpen catcher “Something” Miller (#99, anyone know the name) wrote down a phone number on a roll of athletic tape and proceeded to give it to an attractive lady sitting a few seats away from us. Either Miller is working a high class male prostitute ring out of the Cubs bullpen or being a bullpen catcher has more perks than I thought.

where did you hear this was the reason? and if it was, why was he available in the bullpen? not so sure about this strategy of skipping him and moving him back on a continuous basis.

And after this game, I saw Roast patrolling the players' parking lot while a decent-size gathering of fans desperately tried to get autographs. I saw a few players leave, which was kind of cool.
