Who is more likely to be a threat to the cubs? i think its obvious the cubs are the best team in the division, but assuming the cubs win the division it will be interesting to see who finishes second and likely gets a pretty good shot at a WC birth. I would personally go with the Brewers.

I've maintained all along that the Brewers are the bigger threat. Unless they land a top of the rotation starter before the break, they won't pose a big enough threat, though.

I just can't imagine the Cards can maintain their current level of play a whole lot longer.

I'm more worried about the Brewers. They also have the bullets in the minor league system to go out and make a blockbuster trade.

True, but part of me would like to see them deal LaPorta, Gamel and more to Cleveland just to see Sabathia walk at the end of the season.

I think Milwaukee with C.C. would pose a challenge, but if Jim goes out and gets Harden/Burnett, I don't see them catching the Cubs.

If the Crew doesn't land a very good pitcher, they won't finish within 6-7 games of first.

Brewers. With Gallardo out, the Crew needs a No. 2 starter. If they get one they will be a close(er) second at the end of the year.

I'm actually not sure now. I'm torn.

The Crew has been playing well, but they're also burning Torres for 2 innings pretty much every time they have a lead, so that can't continue forever. If Torres can't continue his pace, that bullpen will be right back where it's always been -- horrible, and blowing leads regularly.

The Cards looked like they were about to start diving when they got swept by the Royals in their own building, but then they went to Boston and for the most part took it to one of the best teams in the AL.

So I don't know. I agree the Crew has the bullets to make a deadline deal, so maybe that's what puts them ahead of the Cardinals. They're only 2 games in back of St. Louis right now so that could flip/flop at any point. Then again, the Cardinals will probably be getting pieces back from injury, so that will in theory give them a boost as well.

I know it's been said before, but:

Run differential

Cubs +112

Brewers -2

It's amazing that 114 runs nets us only 6.5 games in the standings over them.

The thing about the Brewers is, Sabathia is the only available pitcher I could see making enough of an impact on their pitching staff to make a difference, and with other suiters, who are more likely to give him a contract, I cant see the Brewers bidding too high if they wont be able to keep him around. As it is, it's doubtful that they'll be able to afford Sheets next year.

If the Brewers are banking on a scenario with an extremely low chance of happening, then we have nothing to worry about.

Milwaukee's season hinges on their ability to pick up a top notch SP (not just an average one). The team as it is currently comprised just isn't capable of sustaining success (sans Gallardo).

Also, it is a virtual lock that the Cubs are going to add a #2 or #3 type SP before the deadline, IMO.

Interesting topic. Also interesting -- to me, anyway -- that there are no disparaging names cast at the other two teams. On a Cardinal or Brewer forum, one would read comments about the Flubs or Scrubs. But I don't see anything about Birdbrains or Lewzers or anything like that on this forum; only an occaisional White Sox, and not too often for that, either.

Just an observation. . .

The Brewers don't have the benefit of playing in the NL west.

Or having a lights out late inning relieving corps.

Keep reading a bit, I'm sure you'll find plenty of that stuff here too.
