Matt Murton and Patterson platooned in left during the first weekend of the City Series, combining to go 7-for-11 with two walks in the three games...Carlos Zambrano's injury and the recent hitting of Jim Edmonds makes it more likely that Hendry will pursue pitching — C.C. Sabathia and Rich Harden top the list — than another left-handed bat."

In Ken Rosenthal latest video blog, he mentions that the A's could suddenly become buyers.

They're only 4.5 games out. I'm not sure why people think they want to trade their best pitcher. I'm also not sure why we'd be willing to give up much of anything for a guy who has averaged 15 starts per season over the last four years.

Beane was burned on the Giambi deal, and he hasn't let another player walk via FA since. If he doesn't think he can afford to resign him in the offseason, he'll be dealt, unless they're looking like strong WS contenders, and not just a borderline playoff team.

Zito walked via FA. Obviously Beane hasn't gotten burned in that deal so far but he still let Zito walk.

He had no intentions of tendering him as he wasn't good at the end. Not the same.

And although anyone with half a brain could see Zito's pronounced decline, Beane still looks like a genius for that one.

That was one of the best non-signings in recent memory.

The Kaz Matsui non-signing is looking pretty good so far too. .271/.336/.342 playing half his games in Minute Maid... blech.

Doesn't say much, but I figured I'd toss in this Harden mention in Sullivan's latest...

If the Cubs make a move for Oakland's Rich Harden, Hoffpauir might be included in the package.

I'm not sure what kind of value a career minor leaguer like Hoff can have, but whatever. Just figured I'd post it since he mentioned Harden.

I know everybody's having a wet dream over Harden/Burrnett, and I don't blame ya'll for it. But another question that I might ask is, even though the Dodgers are only 4.0 games out in 1st at the NL West, has there been any rumblings relating to Brad Penny?

As for the buy/sell mode, looking at the standings right now, Toronto might be the only one that would be selling, since the other pitchers that the Cubs are interested are 5.0 games or less behind the division leaders.

As far as I know, Penny has not looked anywhere close to right this year.

Rich Harden isn't as cheap or as far away from free agency as some might think. The past two seasons he's pitched less than 75 innings total so if his season comes to an early end again this year Beane won't recoup any value on Harden most likely.

Nope. he's been terrible and now has shoulder problems. It would be best to stay away from him.

Agreed. His best days are behind him.

But he's been behind Eliza Dushku. So, bonus for him.

i don't think you'd find anyone who doesn't love rich harden's ability as a pitcher. but he's thrown only 200 innings in the past 3 years and has been on the DL 3 times with a shoulder injury in the last year. so when you trade for him, be aware that there's a significant chance that he won't be on the mound in september/october.

As I have said all along, Rich Harden ain't getting traded.

come on man, i was halfway through a really delicious bowl of cheerios

Plus, he did try to get a Zito deal done for Milledge from the Mets. If I recall correctly the negotiating went to the end of the trading deadline, but Minaya decided not to make the trade. Beane could have shopped seriously elsewhere, but he may have thought that Minaya would ultimately end up parting with Milledge for Zito since the Mets were in playoff contention.
