Memphis just offered Bruce Peal 7 years and 21 million. No way he turns it down.

UT is denying the report, for what it's worth.

UT officials said they are not aware of a report today by Memphis television station WMC that Pearl has been offered a seven-year, $21 million contract to fill the coaching vacancy at Memphis.

[uT AD Mike] Hamilton repeated Thursday that Memphis has not contacted him asking permission to talk with Pearl.

I don't think it's a certainty that he's gone either. It's hard to pass up that kind of money, but Tennessee can probably get into the $3 million a year ballpark if necessary.

And now the Commercial-Appeal is chiming in that Memphis officials are expected to ask UT AD Mike Hamilton for permission to speak with Pearl sometime today.

Television reports this morning of a 7-year, $21 million offer being made to Pearl were inaccurate. In fact, Pearl had not yet been contacted by Memphis at the time of the report.

But that’s expected to change today with some of Memphis’ other candidates already off the radar, primarily Tim Floyd, who is accepting the Arizona job according to published reports.

Not a good couple of days for WMC-TV. A lot of stuff they put out there turned out to be completely false.

Hopefully the Commercial Appeal will be inaccurate here as well. :D

the whole idea of Cal bringing his recruits along to Kentucky--especially the ones who signed LOIs--is pretty gross. Has that happened a lot in the past?

it sure makes the idea of ncaa basketball being for "student-athletes" seem pretty comical. but we pretty much knew that already.

If coaches can jump schools without punishment, why shouldn't the athletes who made their college choice assumedly in large part due to the coach be able to make the jump too?

From what I've heard, Kentucky will have to give several players the boot if they're going to get Calipari's Memphis recruits because they only have 1 scholarship available for next year. That will be an interesting situation if they do it. I'd love to hear the PR spin put on that one, assuming nobody leaves of their own free will or academic issues.

As it stands, Kentucky has 13 scholarship players committed for next year. It's likely that the point guard- Michael Porter- is leaving. He's not destined for a pro career, and graduates after this season (aftrer 3 years), and jsut had his first kid. He had already hinted at that.

Beyond that, there ahve been rumors of academic issues with DeAndre Liggins and recently Matt Pilgrim (recent transfer from Hampton who sat out this year). Also, it's hard to iamgine a guy as imobile as Josh Harrelson sticking around to play in Calipari's offense.

So there are definitely several possibilities, and it would be surprising if at least one or two guys didn't transfer anyway after the coach left, and it's still POSSIBLE that Patrick Patterson and/or Jodie Meeks leaves for the pros.

They also already had oen kid, Donald Williams, who Gillispie took at the last moment this year with the public udnerstanding that it was for one year only...if he wanted to stay past his freshman year, he had to walk-on, so that 13 number includes him transfering or walking on, plus Jon Hood and Daniel Orton...UK's existing incoming freshmen who have signed and not asked for a release.

You hear anything about Ramon Harris possibly not coming back as well?

So you're saying Calipari's already forcing kids out

I thought Cal pretty much came right and said this in his first interview. He said something to the extent if the guys can't play he will not give them a free ride. Makes sense. UK hired him to win and in order to do that he has to have the guys that can play.

Yeah, coaches often will encourage a player to transfer or decommit if that player doesn't fit the new coach's system.

I know Bruce Pearl and Lane Kiffin did that when they got to Tennessee.

Well if those 2 aren't the moral standards to hold a coach up to, I don't know who is. It is NOT COMMON to run players off when you come to a new school.

It's not running them off. It's being honest with them. If a player is not going to fit a system and, hence, will not play, it's nice for the coach to tell them that.

Neither Pearl nor Kiffin forced anybody to leave or decommit. But they were honest with the players that said players likely would not fit their system. All players who wanted to stay/still enroll at UT had their scholarships honored, though.

Tennessee has announced a new 6-year deal for Bruce Pearl. He's staying at Tennessee! =D>

“Mike has been terrifically supportive and committed to making this one of the best jobs in all of college basketball,” Pearl said. “I want to ensure the University of Tennessee and its fans that I’m 100 percent committed to this school, this program and our student-athletes.

“I truly love my job, and I want it to be clear that I’m not interested in any other job. There’s no place in the country I’d rather be than the University of Tennessee. My children are happy here in the Knoxville community—one is in high school, one is in middle school and two are currently attending the university.

For the second straight day, everyone please point and laugh at Tucson.

yep, i bet you would.

it's a basketball tournament that features teams that are better than 80% of the teams in d-i competition, and if you can win 5 games in a row, you can hold up a trophy for a tournament that has been held for more than 50 years.

i'd say it's a more rewarding end to the season than... say, losing to western kentucky.

Yawn.

The Illini overachieved all season, and I was not surprised they lost. But I don't believe for a second most PSU fans wouldn't trade an NCAA berth and immediate dismissal for an NIT championship, nor do I believe the players would. Not for a second.

past your bedtime?

anyway, i wouldn't, at all. at. all. winning 5 games in a row, two of them at home, at least one of them in really exciting fashion, is a lot more fun than losing a neutral court first round game in the ncaa tournament. i'd say the 36 buses of students that went to MSG today would agree with that.

I don't buy it. Sure it's a positive note to end on, but let's face it: The NIT is perceived by nearly everyone as a tournament for teams that are not quite good enough for the NCAAs. It's like winning the consolation game. Or being your buddy's wingman and taking one for the team. Sure, you got laid, but you're not going to be bragging about it to your friends.

You can rationalize it any way you want to, but the reality is that no one cares who wins the NIT except for who wins the NIT. I suppose if your team isn't accustomed to any sort of postseason success, it might mean more, but after the pseudo-euphoria of winning the NIT wears off, I'll bet you'll agree with me, whether you admit it or not.

If I were a PSU fan, I would be far more satisfied with the improvement within the league and toward the NCAAs than I would be about the NIT.

Though having said all that, I really want to see MSU win the National Championship and make it 2-2 for the Big 10 in postseason tourneys just because it would stick in the crevasses of tools like Hubert Davis.
