Wow. Rick Pitino. Memphis just isn't that kind of program. And to think I was just about ready to hand RedFlash the award for most delusional fan.

RedFlash wants CNS to coach basketball too.

RedFlash thinks they're going to re-hire the re-animated corpse of John Wooden.

Either that or let CNS coach basketball too.

Well, he is completely dedicated to Alabama, seeing as that's his (and everyone else's) dream job. He'd probably coach basketball for free, given the opportunity.

Hahahaha

the next coach(Rick Pitino).

Hahahaha

The Memphis paper is reporting that Memphis may be willing to put a succession clause in Pitino's contract saying his son will take over after he retires. Plus they'll make him the highest paid coach in college basketball.

yeah, still not going to happen.

kentucky fans are still obsessed with pitino. if he wanted that job, he could have had it. he robbed the celtics organization blind, i don't think money is an object to him.

Maybe not. But I guarantee he'll listen. And money is always an object.

Except for John Calipari.

All i said is he took less to go to Kentucky. It doesn't take more money when making a move from Memphis to Kentucky. But going from Louisville to Memphis would take a "blow me away" offer. The money is there for that kind of offer.

Going from Louisville to Memphis would take a "we're joining the ACC next fall" kind of offer.

I'm not delusional. I'm passing on what the Commercial Appeal is reporting.

If you actually believe Memphis has more than a snowball's chance in hell of landing Pitino without drastically improving their basketball standing, you are being delusional.

Just for the heck of it, here's the link to what nick is talking about.

University of Memphis super donor Alan Graf, who is helping spearhead the search for a new basketball coach, said today the school is intent on making a “wow hire.”

Toward that goal, it is believed that representatives of the school contacted Louisville coach Rick Pitino to gauge his interest in the position. Also believed to be high on the list is Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl.

No way am i delusional. I really believe that if Phil Jackson turns them down, Pitino's coming.

I wonder if Massachusetts fans in 1996 were feeling the same way Memphis fans are now.

I see what you're saying but there's a big difference in Umass and Memphis. There's actually tradition here. There were good times before Calipari. Plus the facilities he's helped build here are top notch.

wasn't basketball invented on the campus of umass?

did they have some successful teams, yes. but is there that big of a difference between the two programs? no.

call leaves a vacuum, though.

Hot tip guys, look for Rick Pitino to head to replace Norm Roberts at St. John's. Pitino was said to be swayed by their winning tradition, and their promise to let his stupid kid flame out for a couple seasons before getting S-canned Edited by SouthSideRyan

Between IM conversations with Arizona fans and this thread, I'm pretty speechless.

Conservatively, I'd consider Illinois basketball to be a top 20 program all-time, probably the 2nd or 3rd most successful program in the Big Ten, with a long-standing winning tradition. I think that's a reasonable assumption. If I said something like "I believe if Phil Jackson turns us down, Rick Pitino will be the next coach", would that be delusional?

If you want to take shots at me being a Crimson Tide fan, so be it, I'm a big boy I can handle it, but putting words in my mouth just makes you sound juvenile.

I struggle to see why a coach who just took his team to the Elite 8 (Mike Anderson) or a coach who has incredibly fertile recruiting grounds (Tim Floyd) would jump ship, though.

memphis is as fertile as la and there isnt a better school in the same city ala ucla.

I strongly disagree that Memphis is as fertile a recruiting ground as the LA metro.
