in the ideal scenario his playoff and world series performances are so great he cant resist becoming a FA, and he's off the books for 08 and 09.

Wouldn't the ideal scenario be that he pitches his toucas off, doesn't allow a run for the remainder of the year (including playoffs), but loves the cubs so much that he doesn't opt out and then proceeds to give up zero runs the next two years, as well? :)

AND hits 50 home runs, only to lose the pitcher's silver slugger award to Zambrano.

And comes in fifth in the cy young balloting to his four rotation mates both years.

Here are the FIP (fielding independent ERA, essentially) of the three pitchers mentioned in this thread:

Sabathia 3.31

Burnett 3.31

Harden 2.75

Burnetth as been a BABIP/timing of hits victim this season. He'd be a huge coup and a legit No. 2 for this team, and I would absolutely love to have him at almost any price (given how sad our minor leagues are).

Power rotations win in the playoffs.

Harden plz. And pray that he can stay healthy for 2 months.

I would be extremely happy with any of the three.

I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that one of them come here and that whichever it is stays here so we can have a dominant 1,2 for the next few years.

Burnett is my absolute top choice. I wanted him back when he was an FA and I'd take him now. Of course, I'd have zero qualms about CC or Harden either.

If we are looking towards Wolf or Maddux or the like, we might as well keep what we have.

Marshall/Gallagher would put up better numbers at this point. I agree.

I've told this story a few times before, but I'll tell it again. A few years back I was in the bleachers for a game Burnett's last year in FLA. He was messing around with the bleacher-ites all batting practice. Then he disappeared into the innards of Wrigley and a couple minutes later walks right out the bleacher concourse and down the stairs in right-center and sits down next to some fans...still in complete uniform. Everyone was taking pictures with him and he was signing autographs and just chilling with fans for a good 10-15 minutes. He went back in and came out and while running back into the dugout from CF he turns around to the fans, points to his chest and then points to the field, signaling that he wants to play for the Cubs. It was really one of the coolest things I've seen.

Evidently, he still feels the same way.

After the night I've had....thanks! =D>

Looking at what the Jays need, Cedeno would have to be a top target of theirs. Also, I'm sure Murton would be of interest. I wouldn't think they would really need a pitcher with Halladay, Marcum, McGowan, and Litsch, but who doesn't want pitching.

Not that it's overly important, but I agree that the Jays would want Cedeno. Who does that leave us as our bench shortstop/infielder for the rest of the year? I can't imagine they'd go with Figueroa so what makes the most sense? I also think they'd have more interest in Eric Patterson than Murton next.

Well I posted this in cubs discussion, but would you do this?

Hill, Gallagher, E Pat, and Murton for Burnett (maybe a B/C prospect?)

I don't see them turning that down, maybe I'm wrong though. As of tonight (with the uncertainty of the Zambrano injury) I would do it.

I wouldn't give up near that much, considering Burnett's contract.

Hill and Gallagher? Absolutely not.

OK then, take the other two out, you wouldn't do Hill and Gallagher for Burnett? Given this may be the last time the cubs are in this position for the foreseeable future? Can they get back to this spot right now (First in June)? Maybe. Would Burnett make them the odds on favorite to represent the NL in the world series? Probably. Gallagher's ceiling is probably a solid #3. Hill's ceiling is maybe a number 2, but who would have thought the cubs would have the best record in baseball without Hill? Where would they be with the Hill of 07, or better yet, someone better that 2007 Rich Hill? They are one shutdown pitcher from being an odds on favorite to get to the world series, probably odds on to win the whole thing.

I wouldn't mind trading either for Burnett, but not both. Personally, I would do Hill (or Marshall) Cedeno, and a live arm like Ascanio or Ceda for Burnett. And I think it would be a fair deal.

Patterson, Marshall and Ceda for Burnett. Gives them a versatile top of the order type hitter. A LH starter with some experience and potential to break up their all RH rotation, and a potential power RH reliever, which they are lacking. I think that's a fair trade given Burnett's salary. If they want more, Gallagher, Cedeno, and Ceda/Marshall would work too.

I sure hope your right, I'd be ecstatic with either scenario.

they don't need pitching. they need bats. Cedeno, Murton and something else for Burnett. Toronto has incentive to get rid of that contract and they can't hit. They have freaking Eckstein or Scutaro at SS for god's sake

They need a bat, that's for certain. But it's easier to buy a bat than pitching. If the Cubs give them enough pitching, they may be able to find their bat in the winter.

Then you aren't getting him.

This is AJ Burnett, not CC Sabathia.
