remember when the cardinals traded haren (now one of the best pitchers in baseball) and barton (a top prospect at the time, now a producing major leaguer) for mark mulder, who has pitched like four innings (all terrible) for the cards since the trade? pixie dust all over that one.

omg a guy who hit one hr last year in AAA has two this year? he should only have like 1/2 of a hr based on his AAA hr rate!!! what is with this crazy magic cardinal voodoo???

Let's pick one stat to ridicule from the list and ignore every other grossly over-achieving player! Yeah!

all of them are stupid! yeah!

Remember that time that Cardinals relief pitcher plowed into the back of a pickup truck and died?

Or that other Cardinals pitcher who died of an undetected heart condition in his sleep the night before his next start?

Man, that team is just so insanely lucky.

You cant deny that The Cards have gotten lucky with pitching. Carpenter and Mulder may or may not pitvh thuis season. Wainwright is on the DL, yet they still keep getting quality starts from 2 former relievers, a rookie, and a guy who nobody else wanted during the offseason.

As for the offense, its doing pretty much whats expected, aside from Ludwick, who even seems to be cooling down a bit. Pujols is Pujols. Glaus is Glaus. Ankiel is doing whats expected from him low average with some home runs. Yadier Molinas doing well for himself, but nothing out of the ordinary. Miles, Kennedy, and Ryan are a bunch of gritty white guys.

I was hoping you were gonna with the Chris Farley Show motif after those first 2.

'Member when, when that Cardinals manager fell asleep at the red light, that was awesome.

The Cards are so lucky.....they have this rookie catcher who never hit at all before last year in AAA and now he's the leading vote-getter in the NL at his position.

Oh wait, that's us

But they do have this over-the-hill 38 year old scrap heap CF who is hitting the snot out of the ball.

Nope, us too.

Oh, right, their light-hitting SS who everyone wanted to be replaced in the off season who is leading the team in average and has a bazillion multi-hit games.

Um.

Must be the mediocre reliever turned lights-out starter who is undefeated at home.

No, not the Cards?

Arguing that we have had some luck has no bearing on how lucky the Cardinals have been. We've had some players over achieve, and we've had some underachieve. It's hard to find anyone on the Cards roster that is underachieving right now.

Troy Glaus is having his worst year since his rookie year. Adam Kennedy hasn't played near his career levels for about 2 years. Chris Duncan's OPS is 200 points below his career and he is slugging .333. Jason Isringhausen has an ERA of 5.74, the last time he was within 2 runs of that was 2000. Ron Villone is having the worst year of his 14 year career. Hell, there have been 7 pitchers in the bullpen that have ERA's over 5.00. As for the Brian Barton nonsense from earlier, he had 1 homerun in AAA because he played only 25 games. The guy had a career .893 OPS in the minors. Maybe you should look a little closer and use some objectivity.

how about chris carpenter? he has zero innings pitched...i'd say that's underachieving.

I'll give you Izzy as an underachiever on the roster. Glaus has been on a downhill turn for some time now, his performance isn't underachieving, it should have been expected. Duncan has always been a platoon player because he can't hit lefties. His minor league numbers and past splits show it. His career OPS is inflated due to a fluke 1.037 OPS he put up against righties in about 300 at bats in 2006. His drop as a regular player this year is also to be expected. Villone: See Glaus. He's old and has been in decline, a bad performance is expected and not underachieving. I'll also agree that the Barton analogy was weak, but the others really weren't.

No, that's what you get when you rely on guys who have had multiple surgeries and have missed multiple seasons before. His innings are being picked up by someone else. What is lucky is that their starting rotation has performed just as well as most would have expected if they had all of those guys that are on the DL healthy and productive. Losing someone the caliber of Carpenter should have been a big hit to the rotation.

my goodness, don't you people remember last year when the cardinals hung around despite having a team full of scrubs, only to fall apart late in the season and finish below .500 and 7 games out? same thing's going to happen this year, except they'll probably finish 10+ games out.

quit whining about the frickin' cardinals...it makes cubs fans look like white sox fans. you know, the fans everyone around here likes to mock for having an obnoxious, unhealthy obsession with their rival?

only marginally worse, and he's not on steroids any more.

i'll give you this one; he's been a disappointment.

Jason Isringhausen has an ERA of 5.74, the last time he was within 2 runs of that was 2000.

old

Ron Villone is having the worst year of his 14 year career.

that's because a lot of those guys are bad pitchers. mike parisi was a bad pitcher at AA and AAA; no big surprise that he has been a bad pitcher at the big league level as well.

Every team has players that have career years and down years. It's just a matter of getting guys that have a solid mean and play to it every year. Baseball takes luck out of the equation (mostly) by playing 162 games.

Uh, yeah, the fact that they're still cranking out quality starts by guys like Looper, Lohse, and Wellemyer when those other guys are gone. Thats pretty lucky. How many teams would be able to stay above water with their 3 top starter gone?

pixie dust doesn't work on good players, only terrible quad A players
