I've been dying to post this over there.

Much of their hopes at this point are being pinned on how it isn't over because the Brewers were 8.5 games up last season but blew it.

At the high point of their season, the 8.5 game lead on June 23rd, the Brewers had a run differential of +29 vs. the Cubs' of +22. The pythagorean win percentages were almost identical for the two teams.

With the Cubs seven games ahead of the Brewers right now, the Cubs are at +93 runs and the Brewers are at -13, a difference of 10 games in pythagorean projection to this point.

I just visited that forum for the first time and in the first thread I open I was immediately treated to this gem regarding the Cubs:

I'm sure they'll be thinking, "We win X in a row, and we're still only up 6.5 games on Milwaukee?!?!? What do we have to do?"

Yeah, I'm sure that's what the Cubs are thinking right now.

The guy in the next post said something about Zambrano not being a good second half pitcher so I decided I had read enough.

I don't have an account, but I saw something that peaked my curiosity.

Here's hoping the Brewers make it close...the Cubs clinch the division in Milwaukee on Friday night...the Brewers clinch the wildcard on Sunday - on the same field.

Does anyone know if anything like that has ever happened? Two teams clinching the division and wild card while playing a series against each other. That would be kind of neat.

The Yankees and Red Sox did that in 2005 I believe.

Yeah...it really wasn't that cool for 2 reasons:

1) They finished with identical records, but the Yankees won the division on a tie breaker

2) The Indians swooned big time meaning by Saturday I believe both teams had clinched a playoff bearth, so the actual designation of who was Division Champ and who was Wild Card didn't matter too much

I'm not quite sure how to prove this, but with the SOS argument that keeps coming from the Brewers fans, I wonder how much of the difference is that the Brewers got to play 6 games against the Cubs, and the Cubs had 6 games against the Brewers. Anyone able to show what would happen if the Cubs and Brewers had "played themselves", instead of each other, so to speak?

Red Sox - Yankees in 2005?

I don't know but according to ESPN's RPI, the Brewers are right up there with the Cubs

Cubs are the number 2 team, Brewers number 4. I'm guessing a big reason is SOS.

Take out those games, and the opponents' games against the Cubs or Brewers, and I suspect SOS is pretty close.

lots of anti-cubs anger over there. i wonder how different it would be if last years collapse never happened, or if someone else, say the astros, won the NLC last year?

Eff the Brewers and their sham winning streak. Anybody would have swept the D-backs (especially witohut Webb and Haren) right now.

I'll go on record and predict this is the longest winning streak they'll have all season.

Nah they've hated us for awhile due to the road nature of their games against us at Miller. Cub fans are hated by a lot of people for this reason.

That wouldn't happen if the other teams could fill their ballparks with their own fans.

Kyle, why are you asking? Is there a reason you cannot register there?

Anyway, I would not worry about the Brewers this year. Yost is not the brightest bulb in the Managerial Tool Chest and they have an injury-prone pitching staff. Not a good combination if they want to play in October.

Getting the to stat analysis earlier in this thread, while this year's numbers compare favorably to last year's numbers, I put little stock in them because, in baseball, things can change quickly. Look how quickly the Tigers went from 119 losses (2003) to the World Series (2006).
