...is currently only .352. This is .015 points below the team average and .029 points below the on base of Ronnie Cedeno of all people. Discuss.

Very strange. It's not like he's swinging at a bunch of pitches out of the zone, as his K rate is the best of his career. His P/PA is lower than most years and his career numbers, but well within .2 of his normal numbers. His walk rate was fine in April. It took a hit in May as he struggled. Still, if Derrek Lee is 6th best on this team as far as BB/PA goes, the Cubs don't have anything to worry about.

Not worried. He'll catch fire soon and take some more walks.

i disagree here. players tend to draw less walks when they are "on fire". then again, you could just be saying that his walk rate is going to catch on fire. his K rate is down to 12.8%, so that's a positive i guess... i would definitely rather him draw more walks though. his OPS+ right now is 126, which is just off his career average of 124.

edit: yeah, i started to post this and ran downstairs. raw beat me to the K rate.

I honestly am not that worried. He is seeing the ball well, and not swinging and missing. If he keeps putting the ball in play as much as he is right now, then he is going to catch a few breaks and get some base hits. I would like to see him try and hit more line drives this year. But you have to take the good with the bad, because he is hitting fly balls which leads to his 13 home runs. Which are WAY up from last year. I don't have a problem with him swinging the backs. He is an RBI guy, so I love the aggressiveness. We have good OBP guys. We need to Derrek to drive the runs in and swing the bat.

Just out of curiousity, isn't D. Lee well known for a slow starts during the beginning of the season to May?

Well, his OPS right now is at .890, so it's acceptable right now. Also, his LD% is at .217, while his BABIP is at .298. Maybe he has been slightly unlucky...? Overall I'm not too worried.

Earlier in his career, yes. Not so much in recent years.

Maybe so, but either way, I'm just glad to have him on this team, even if his numbers aren't where they normally should be. His defense is, IMHO, very valuable for this team.

I think D-lee has taken more of a slugger mentality this year. He had his bad year after his wrist injury, and I think decided to take some big rips at some pitches he might normally let go by. It's resulted in more homers and a lower OBP, which fortunately has coincided with an overall increase in team OBP, so it's been masked. But I think it's also resulted in a lot of outs that he normally otherwise wouldn't make.

I don't think anyone doubts DLee will rebound from his slump. I hope he can stop hitting into so many DPs until then... I'd rather have Aramis hitting third right now.

I wasn't saying he shouldn't be on the team; he definitely should be. I was just saying that he hasn't been a slow starter in recent years as he was earlier in his career (through 2004).

Oh I know you weren't saying that. I was just simply pointing it out that he did save several runs/games with his impressive glovework at 1st base. I guess, to me that he's just been unlucky so far, and I also think when the weather warms up, he'll get warmed up. *shrug*

He has also saved 2-3 games with his glove.

ok, that's not true at all.

i was worried going into the season that lee was going to continue his power decline, but at least maintain his OBP. looks like it's going the other way around so far this year.

I'd guess he has around 16-22 RBIWGs (Runs batted in with glove). I'm making this a new stat

While it may get you style points to bat in a run with your glove, if you get jammed on the inside even a little, your fingers are gonna freaking sting for like an hour.
