Ugh. Does anyone have faith in this guy facing other #2 starters in the playoffs? I don't. At all.

No. Not at all either. I think if the Cubs wanna go far in the playoffs they're going to need to aquire a #2.

Most people here have been saying that for most of this season. Lilly isn't this bad, but he's not a "true" #2 that you can hinge your playoffs on with the ace.

yep...this is why i constantly pray for the bluejays to loose at least 95% of their games till the allstar break...

BURNETT CHA CHA CHA

Or we could just call our number 2 back up from Iowa.

Rich Hill has not performed like a #2 at any point this season. I hope he does, but he's got to get things going in the right direction.

Yes in his what, 3 starts up here he wasn't great. Which is shocking. Most guys are great every game they pitch.

Come on we gave him 3 to 4 starts and then jerked him around.

You know my stance on Hill, I'm not his biggest supporter, but I don't dislike the guy.

Its not that his starts "weren't great". He was amechanical mess and had no idea where the ball was going. It would have been better if he was just getting hit, but he couldn't get it over the plate.

Yeah, but why can we let Marquis suck up here, yet not let Hill get things figured out? They were still both giving us equal chance to win. To me it reeks of the same thing we are doing with Pie and Edmonds. Get rid of the young guy, while letting some washed up guy play.

DL ChA CHA CHA...

what are you talking about

and on the topic of hill...who isn't a number two pitcher...

why not have

zambrano

burnett

lilly

dempster

hill

that is a rotation i would have a lot of confidence in should we make the playoffs

We'd have a five-man rotation in the playoffs?

clever...those are our available pitchers that lou can work with...better?

*sigh*

So we're one of the dozen or so teams that spend the whole year thinking that "all" they need is one really good pitcher? Join the freaking crowd.

There will be very few No. 2 quality starting pitchers available at the deadline and teams lining up to get them. The price will be more than Hendry will be willing to pay, I'd bet. Probably more than our farm can even afford.

According to SNLVAR, which accounts for the quality of batters faced, Hill has contributed more to the Cubs this year than Lilly or Marquis, and he's done so in half as many starts as either.

Frankly, I'm praying the Cubs go all-out after CC Sabathia.

With what top prospects?

Let's give them top five picks Ryan Harvey and Josh Vitters.

If the Indians get hot you can forget about it.

Indeed, but it's not going to stop me from praying.

Unless the Cubs can somehow negotiate an extension for him, I get the feeling he'd be a rental. The price won't be quite as steep as you might think.

Well, that is one case where I think you would have to trust your eyes over the numbers. Lilly has been shaky, but he's put together a pretty decent run that is better than Hill was able to do.

It's a supply/demand thing. There will be a ton of teams still in the race short on starting pitching, rental or not.

oh christ...you guys are so nit-picky...you know what the definition of rotation is don't you?

why does everything have to be broken down to such a small factor of complaint...?

why?

Yeah, just like I predicted: We're not going to hit fly balls today. Lots of grounders and we won't get a sniff.

Going back to work now. A New Era, have fun with tomorrow's game thread.

Hell two teams in our division could make a better run at him that we can

Milwaukee could offer Gamell and or LaPorta

St. Louis could offer Rasmus and Anderson

I'm curious to see who ends up in the race in that area. A number of those teams have farm systems as bad as, if not worse than, the Cubs (Astros, White Sox), while other teams have been somewhat stingy with their top prospects when it comes to trades (Yankees, Angels).

We'll see what happens. I'm not going to hold out hope, but I think the Cubs would have a reasonable shot at it.
