"There are a lot of things more important than just the game. I have a whole list of things on my plate right now, so when I'm here, I'm doing my job and doing the best I can. And when I get home, I separate myself from it."

Good attitude Jim, get off this team ASAP

As fun as it is to bash Edmonds, that is a pretty good attitude. It is just a game.

Until you get payed for it then it's your job.

Isn't that a good attitude to have about any job? Not taking your work home with you, seperating business and personal life, etc? Most people would praise any other professional who took that sort of attitude toward their life.

I was talking about it just being a game. It's not that he's out there playing checkers with the neighborhood kids, he's getting paid a large sum of money to be good at his job. It's fine that he doesn't bring it home with him and that is probably a good thing for his mental health.

It's attitudes like this that keep Zambrano out of jail. ;)

It's the right answer from the wrong guy right now. If Chipper Jones gave the same answer, he'd be lauded for it -- not taking his amazing season too seriously, remembering to stay level-headed. It's the same for an abysmal season, too.

Precisely. It's so unbelievably stupid how people bash players when they say things like this.

I'm not going to say otherwise because I don't like said player.

For me I have a problem with it being called just a game, not bashing how he felt outside of it. I think it depends on how you look at your craft or job. It's great you can separate the two but imo being dismissive over your job while you are preforming way below expectations is different than someone who exceeding expectations and feeling the same way.

He wasn't calling it just a game, a poster later wrote that it was just a game. Edmonds said, "There are a lot of things more important than just the game."

Likewise, my buddy the lawyer said, "There are a lot of things more important than just this case." Somebody else may say, "There are a lot of things more important than just this report."

There's a difference between dismissively calling your job "just a game" and saying there are more important things in the world than just your job. That is especially true for somebody who obviously is going to be retiring or switching careers within the next couple months.

So, is he going to know when the early bird special is and how much he'll have to cough up?

I wouldn't really have a problem with the comments if he was hitting .290, but the dude doesn't seem to realize he's gonna be out of a job pretty soon. Oh well, I don't want him on the team anyway.

Actually, from the looks of the quote it seems that he does realize what the future holds.

I don't have a problem with what he said. I do have to question where this "fire" is that he supposedly had when he came to Chicago? Fine, separate your job from your personal life. But do your job better!

Didn't Corey Patterson get blasted by the media for a "just the game" comment very similar to this one that some misconstrued as "just a game?"

Your buddy must not be a very good lawyer. ;)

Well, he said more important, he didn't say more likely to take up my time.

I'm going to repeat a post from another thread. If wrigley23 can make the same post 20 times, I will as well.

I never liked Edmonds. I've openly admitted that many times, but if he came here and hit, I'd forget about all that and welcome him with open arms.

However, he has nothing left. So, right now he gets the double whammy of being a player I've never liked (aka Todd Hundley) and playing at a level that is extremely low.

For comparisons, the turd Todd Hundely at least had a 67 OPS+ in his worst season as a Cub. Is that bad? Yes, but it's still 92 points higher than what Edmonds is doing. Neifi Perez is his worst stint as a Cub had a 53 OPS+. Bad? Yes, but still 78 points higher than Edmonds. Jacque Jones at his worst produced an 87 OPS+ which is 112 points higher than Edmonds. Amazing isn't it?

Need more? The worst Jose Macias could do was a 52 OPS+. That's 77 points higher than Edmonds. Paul Noce even put up a 58 OPS+, Jeff Blauser never fell below 69, Ced Landrum 66, Juan Pierre 82, Willie Wilson 75, Corey Patterson 54, and Ozzie Timmons 71.

We've seen some suckage with this team, but Edmonds over the past two weeks has reached epic levels. He was hated when he got here and has done nothing to help this team win. I'm highly critical of the Cubs at times, but when the games begin, I root for anyone who wears the uniform...even those that are asses and those that suck. However, Edmonds was a player I never wanted. Had he been able to provide even a scintilla of offense, I would have learned to like him, albeit begrudgingly, but I hated him before he came and he's brought never before seen levels of suckage with him. He's done. Cut bait.

I think it's more likely he realizes he'll be out of a job but still collecting his $8 million salary.
