Forgive me if this conversation is buried inside of another thread, I haven't seen it. I've seen so many stories on Geo's inside-the-parker, and now I've seen yet another popping up today: http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-080520-geovany-soto-inside-park-chicago-cubs,1,6627056.story

Bob Watson basically agrees that it's a home run. What kills me about this whole story is everyone is basically overlooking the stupid park factor of the whole story. In the Astros park, Geo basically could have even hit the ball a little better, a little higher, but had it been a little more to the left, it would have not been an automatic home run like what he hit should have been. The line for hitting a home run should be horizontal, no ifs, ands or buts. Teams shouldn't be allowed to arbitrarily have [expletive] home run lines that run up or down in weird places for no good reason like that ball park. As much press as this story has gotten, I'm amazed no one has commented on the idiocy that is the former Ten Run field.

you could do the same in wrigley and it could go into the well instead of basket

Not even close to the same thing. What you just mentioned is due to the shape of the park. Minutemaid is due to an arbitrary line drawn on the wall. There's no reason for it to be drawn where it is.

The way they have it, while not ideal, is the way it has to be. The line couldn't be the same all the way around, otherwise it would be impossible to hit a homerun to left-center. I don't understand your complaint about Soto hitting the ball harder and higher but a little more towards left, it wouldn't have been a homerun. If you hit a ball 400 feet to center field, it's not going to be a homerun, but if you hit it 400 feet to left field, it's obviously going to leave. Those are the breaks. I think the reason no one is taking up your point of view is because it's invalid (and I mean that with no disrespect intended).

What ever happened to making a guy clear the fence for a homer? It makes no difference how far away the fence is.

Over the fence -- homer.

Not over the fence -- not a homer.

This should be easy.

Minutemaid Park is stupid --- 10000000% agreed.

i'm pretty sure it's not where the line was originally. i think they artificially raised the line between the crawford boxes and deep left center in order to take away some cheap homers to straight left

Does Fenway get an exemption from being stupid? It's got two vertical lines on its homerun "fence", though one of them (the deepest part of the park) is angled to offer little to no possibility of Soto's situation last night.

Minutemaid is stupid.

I like Minute Maid

And why not? Their products are refreshing and delicious.

The park bearing their name, however, strikes me as kitschy and obnoxious.

No, I hate Fenway. The HR lines, the Pesky pole, LF so shallow Pierre could throw someone out at the plate from the wall, fans that are sitting down the first base line are facing CF. Stupid.

ETA: Minute Maid Park is stupid too.

Derwood is right.

Back in the Enron days, the boundary in left-center was at the top of the bullpen fence, not all the way up at the balcony, and the vertical yellow line you're complaining about didn't exist.

So the arbitrary line was a necessary element of reducing the Ten Run Field-ness of the place.

Personally I like the park's uniqueness.

The hill, the pole, and the 315 foot home runs are way more stupid than that. The park is stupid, but not for the reason you said.

The entire park, including what the original poster complained about are stupid.

I think Houston should allow fans to bring their picnic baskets and park their butts in the grassy knoll, giving the CF even more obstacles.

minute maid park is a joke. it's quirky for the sake of being quirky. the green monster is at least built to compensate for the short porch in left field because of landsdowne st. running behind it.
