Lou says Gallagher will get at least two more starts.

Piniella has been impressed with Gallagher's fastball and the way he gets ahead of hitters, but he told the rookie right-hander on Friday that he needs to do a better job of putting hitters away. Among other things, that means not risking an 0-2 pitch a hitter can drive, such as the high slider Gallagher hung to Carlos Lee on Wednesday that turned into a game-changing three-run homer.

Gallagher didn't benefit from the wind half as much as Kuroda did tonight. He had good stuff. Although, I wish he wouldn't try to get fancy after getting ahead. That's what Wood used to do, and is what, imo, caused as many issues with his arm as the innings did.

Just be efficient, stay in the zone (preferably low and away or up and in), and let the awesomeness that is our offense take care of you.

It was a good start. Weather happens. You still need to win, whatever it takes on a particular night. If Sean got a few breaks because of the wind, fine. So did Kuroda.

Marshall and Hill going down with injuries could be the best thing to happen to Gallagher. It pretty much ensures he'll be up here for another few weeks while those guys work out their injuries and also attempt to get back in the good graces of the Cubs.

I'm also curious as to whether he suffered any ill effects from the comebacker off his pitching hand in the first. It looked like his velocity was down after that happened. Moreover, considering he threw 111 pitches in freaking cold weather, that might be a bit of a concern in his next few starts.

With that out of that way, I've said this a number of times so far about Gallagher. The best projections for him have him as a #2/#3, but that's down the line. He needs to learn how to effectively attack major league hitters and how to get by on days when he doesn't have his best stuff. That will come with time and experience. Perhaps he might be as effective this season as, say, Jason Marquis or Jon Lieber, but this experience is enormously important for him. I'd rather see him get this experience now while he has the opportunity. It should pay dividends for the Cubs over the next few years, considering he will get this experience and the Cubs will have a much clearer picture of just how good he can be.

what's the difference between progressing smartly through the system and progressing foolishly through the system?

You're a real class act. I'll buy you a Funk & Wagnall's--you're such a witty guy!

i don't know what that is, but i'll assume it's from the 1950's and politely decline.

or should i "smartly" decline...?

You're a law school grad who can't decode a common usage of "smart"

really? And you think that "foolish" is the antonym in this case?

since the usage of the word "smart" made no sense, i didn't know exactly what the proper antonym was. sorry.

As my last post pointed out, you failed to understand the very first adjective definition of the very common word "smart"

It made perfect, textbook, modern sense. Making fun of someone for using correct and simple English you fail to understand is not the way to make them look stupid.

Some comments from Lou.

"He's still got a couple things to work on, but, yeah, he's telling us he wants to stay in the rotation," skipper Lou Piniella said.

And apparently the team was wearing Gallagher Iowa Cubs t-shirts.

Much less heralded than Fukudome's giveaway were the Iowa Cubs T-shirts the Cubs were sporting in the clubhouse. Those bore the name and number of Gallagher. For that, Gallagher thanked center fielder Jim Edmonds.

"I guess it was a giveaway they had down in Des Moines," Gallagher said. "They probably put the order in before I got called back up. They sent me a box of them. I opened it up, and Jimmy saw them and said, 'I want one.' That just started from there. Everyone just kept taking one."

The one run that Gallagher did give up absolutely should have never been on base. Ump absolutely blew a third strike call. As far as I'm concerned, Sean gave up 0 earned.

Great game by Sean. He did it with basically just a fastball last night. I'm concerned for future outings if he can't throw the breaking ball either for strikes or close enough to get swings and misses. Next 2 starts will be very telling. He will face an injury riddled Colorado team on Sunday, but is coming off of 111 pitches. Then he sees LA again, the first time to get him for a 2nd time. If he can give the team 2 more quality starts, he's probably not leaving the rotation.

So when will Marquis have A quality start? You'd think somebody like Texas or the Angels would be interested in him thus making room for Hart or Hill or Marshall.

while 7IP/1ER is great, it's not a good forecast of future starts. He was pitching with the help of gail-force winds blowing in, and he was facing the Dodgers' AA team. That said, your job is to dominate in those situations and he did. He should do well against the injured Rockies as well.

That makes me hate Edmonds a little bit less
