Giving him starts in CF instead of Johnson, giving him some starts at SS to keep Theriot from wearing down and crashing like last year, giving him some spot starts at 2B.

congratulations on not choosing the option of "bench theriot." i actually agree with you here on all counts, as long as he can play an adequate CF. but i'd probably put him out there with zambrano or dempster on the ground... with fly ball pitchers on the mound i'd go with guys who are more familiar with the position.

feeling optimistic over there jake? the pirates aren't ready to contend this year IMO, but there have been some promising signs, and i think that neal huntington has the organization headed in a much better direction (granted, it'd be hard to be worse than littlefield)

I actually want the Pirates to be good. Not at the expense of us, but like Wild Card good.

No kidding. Even though they're division rivals, I just can't feel anything but sorry for the Pirates. They're a classic legacy team and it would be cool to see them do well again.

Ronny has had great success vs. Gorzelanny and Duke in his career. I'd love for him to get a couple starts this weekend. Theriot, Ramirez and Fukudome could all be due for a rest. I'd love to rest Theriot today, because of his weak numbers vs. Gorzo. Rest ARam tomorrow, because you don't need as much offense with Zambrano on the mound. And rest Fukudome on Sunday, if needed.

No kidding. Even though they're division rivals, I just can't feel anything but sorry for the Pirates. They're a classic legacy team and it would be cool to see them do well again.

I used to really dislike them in the 70's when they scored runs like Marquis was pitching to them every day. The Lumber Company, man they could hit.

feeling optimistic over there jake? the pirates aren't ready to contend this year IMO, but there have been some promising signs, and i think that neal huntington has the organization headed in a much better direction (granted, it'd be hard to be worse than littlefield)

If the Pirates never had to face Chicago, as they do for three games at Wrigley Field beginning today, they would have a contender's record and statistics.

Consider that they are 0-6 against the Cubs, 20-15 against everyone else. Or that they bat .222 against the Cubs' pitchers, .301 against everyone else. Or that their pitchers have a 7.20 ERA against the Cubs, 4.45 against everyone else.

And here is one individually: Freddy Sanchez is 3 for 27 vs. Chicago.

So, yes, I am feeling optimistic. I think this Pirates team is a lot better than anyone expected them to be. Including themselves.

I beg to differ. I know of parts of the Eastern Time Zone where the sun doesn't rise until 8:20 or so in the morning. Now, that's acceptable if you're in Alaska, but not Indiana. Central Time > Eastern Time. :P

Glad there's no Edmonds in today's lineup... looks like they may actually stick by the whole platoon argument for once.

But what happened to worrying about splitting up all of those right handed hitters? Wow.
