Derek Bell took some great swings in that game.

I remember getting back to my room in the 4th inning that day. I had a final that day, and almost sprinted home to see the game for one, and to try to avoid the pouring rain. Wood just struck out the last batter of that inning to make it 8 thru 4. At that point, I assumed that there would be a rain delay in this game's near future.

Wood had an amazing 5 men strikeout looking in a row. And TWICE struck out 5 in a row swinging. I'll always hate Craig Biggio for completing selling out to put the ball in play in the 9th, so his team wouldn't be on the wrong end of non-shared history. I hate Ricky Gutierrez for that "hit". I hate Kevin Orie for not making a play. I hate Bob Rosenberg for not scoring that play an error. I hate Kerry Wood for not doing it again.

I remember leaving work early, knowing that something special was happening. I hauled ass home and watched the game from the 5th inning on in complete awe!

Sadly, I didn't get the chance to see it live. I think I was probably staying after school for a volleyball game or practice.

I finally got around to transferring my ESPN Classic copy to DVD. Watching his strikeouts is never going to get old.

Man, I'd have given anything to be at that game.

I was a junior in high school on that day, so I didn't get home from school until about the 6th inning, but I had Pat and Ron on the radio and instantly turned the game on because I just had that feeling it was going to be special.

I always catch the game when it's on ESPN classic. Good lord what stuff Kerry had. Too bad he never panned out like we thought he would. :(

I got the Cubs greatest games boxed set for Christmas...just finished watching this game. Again. Wicked.

Shamu the Killer Cub lives off of this day! Sorry...couldn't resist.

Mike & Mike were talking about this game today. The what could have been and how incredible this game was were the most talked about regarding this game. I hope Kerry shuts up all the critics and slams the door on teams for the rest of the year.

Memories of this game just make me sad... I start thinking of what might've/should've been... I know Kerry's made millions of $$, but I can't help but feel bad for him that he couldn't become the pitcher we all thought he'd be

that game gave fans unreasonable expectations about wood that he would have never been able to live up to, injury or no injury. that being said, k #19 is my favorite.

Barring injury, Wood could have easily been a 15-22 win guy year-in, year-out, taking several K titles with a low 3s ERA and most likely several postseason victories. I think he would have lived up to expectations very easily. I doubt fans were thinking 20K was going to happen on a regular basis.

I was at that game. I left San Diego at 7am the day of the game and drove 700 MPH all the way, stopping for gas 6 times.

And you people are amazed by a 20 K performance? Unbelievable. :D

This game will be shown to my future kid once he/she is old enough to understand baseball. I have been, and will forever be a Kerry Wood fan simply because of this game. I hope he gets it together and becomes the most dominant closer in baseball the next few years.

The umpire, Jerry Meals wrestled with me in HS. I was 103 and he wrestled 98.

Thank goodness for the slurve that he used in that game, a great memory for us a bad memory for his arm.

Posted
I miss the slurve. that was one of the nastiest pitches I've ever seen

I do too, but it definetly came with a price. Wonder if in a desperate situation in the 7th game of the world series Wood would throw that pitch just once or twice to get the guy?

I've still got the game on VHS. Watching those highlights makes me want to go out and purchase a VCR now... 8-)

I still think that Orie should have come up with that ball, and it should have been an error - giving Wood the No-Hitter that he deserved. That was the most dominating pitching performances I have ever seen. Also note that Houston was one of the best hitting teams in baseball at that time.

I did at one point... of course, my silly butt didn't label it, so who knows where it is now. :(

I might have to purchase that Greatest Games DVD to see it in all its glory.
