Cubs up 2-1 against the Dodgers in the bottom of the 7th with the bases juiced and 2 outs....Theriot due up...if only he had a SS who has had awesome success with bases loaded this season...if only...

Dont forget the part where Soriano walked right in front of Theriot, and then Theriot swings at the 1st pitch. Smart Ryan smart.

It was a good pitch to hit, and with the bases loaded you're supposed to look to swing at the first pitch. It's not like Park walked Soriano on 4 straight pitches nowhere near the zone either.

With the bases loaded you are supposed to swing at the first pitch, huh? Since when is this a rule? Every "ball" he threw to Soriano was not close to the zone, hence Soriano walking, had they been close you know Sori would have been hacking.

You look for a fastball to drive on the first pitch with the bases loaded, because you're likely to get one since the pitcher really doesn't want to fall behind and feel the pressure of walking a run in. Sure enough, Theriot got a fastball right over the plate, and couldn't do anything with it. Doesn't make his decision to swing a bad one though.

yeah, people need to stop bitching every time a guy swings at the first pitch and fails. there are bad times to swing at the first pitch, like when you're the third batter in an inning and the first two batters made outs in three pitches total. or if the starting pitcher can't find the plate to save his life. but if your team never swings at the first pitch, opposing teams are going to figure that out, and all your hitters are going to start off behind in the count.

another reason is that the cubs are hitting .403/.406/.611/1.017 on the first pitch.

I understand there are times to swing at the 1st pitch, but when the pitcher just walked the previous batter, that is not one of those times.

It was an 8 pitch at bat, not indicative of a guy who can't find the plate with a map.

Do you not agree that it was a good pitch to hit? Since it was a reliever, tiring the guy out isn't an issue, and getting a pitch that good to hit probably wouldn't come again in that at bat. Taking a pitch simply because you don't think you should swing is letting the pitcher off the hook.

how is the OBP higher than the AVG, when the first pitch is put into play every time

Gotta agree. Park wasn't exactly wild.

1. A Soriano, LF

2. M Fontenot, 2B

3. D Lee, 1B

4. A Ramirez, 3B

5. K Fukudome, RF

6. J Edmonds, CF

7. G Soto, C

8. R Cedeno, SS

9. S Gallagher, P

wtg, Lou. I love this lineup. It doesn't even follow the idiotic plan of splitting up the lefties and righties. Edmonds batting ahead of Soto is ridiculous.

Fontenot 2nd?

Fukudome and Edmonds back to back?

Soto 7th behind Edmonds?

Cedeno 8th?

There's all kinds of places for soapdropping edits in that lineup.

edmonds on the 25-man roster is dumb enough; batting him 6th is pretty much insane.

Lou loves the hit and run with the big boppers up.

Lou is not smart.

Nothing wrong with playing small ball on a night like tonight.

Plenty wrong when it's Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez involved in the hit and run.

I'm going to blow my brains out if I see another strikeout/throwout on a 3-2 hit-and-run tomorrow.

Quick count on free outs given to the Dodgers tonight? Three that they actually conceded, with two botched sac bunts and one failed steal to "stay out" of the double play (by running into it!). In addition, Cedeno was also trying to give up an out in the eighth. So, basically, Lou was giving away a good 15% of the Cubs' outs for the game for free.

Some would say that in a day where the wind is blowing hard in, you have to "manufacture" runs anyway, give up outs to get one run. I'd argue that outs are even more valuable in that case.

Obviously Lou doesn't know how to manage a bullpen. Why pull Wuertz if you can't give him a chance to at least try to get out of the mess he created? Unfortunately, Lou went through Marmol to clean up Wuert'z poop, which worked. Now the genious decides to try him in the 9th inning, only to see it backfire.

Somebody from the media really needs to let Lou know that overworking Marmol isn't exactly a great idea, especially when you will be needing him fresh in Septemeber/October.

As I said in the game thread, Lou has to be one of the five worst managers in baseball.

Well we are 16 games over .500 so I think anyone who complains constantly or says something like what's above might want to take the results into account. The above statement would mean that at least 24 other managers would have us more than 16 games above .500. Has Lou made mistakes of course and I'm mad when they happen but I don't constantly criticize a guy who has winning.

Marmol's arm will fall apart by mid August at this rate.

I have to wonder that in a game where we needed 4 IP out of the bullpen, and had used 4 relievers yesterday(and Marmol and Wood had both thrown in 5 of 8 games), why Eyre, who has thrown less than 30 pitches in the past week, wasn't used.

And who hasn't giving up a run yet this year.

That's the part I don't understand. I was understanding the bullpen usage until the 9th. In the 9th, Eyre needed to be brought in to face the same left-handers that Cotts faced in the 7th. No need to throw Marmol out there for more than the 2 outs he got in the 8th when you have a great situation for a left-hander to pitch.
