If his swing was good enough to put up a monster season in AAA, it'll be good enough to be adequate for a CFer in the majors.

Not necessarily true.

Respectfully disagree. Major-league pitchers are better, but they aren't 120 points of batting average better. If Pie tanks completely this season, it'll be because he tanked, not the jump from AAA to the majors.

I disagree with you. ML pitchers are miles better. Ever hear of Roosevelt Brown? Julio Zuleta? Trenidad Hubbard? Those are all guys who at completely ripped AAA pitching for multiple years. None of them amounted to anything in the majors.

Triple A is full of journeymen who will never be major league pitchers. Though, ML pitching is watered down, most of the league isn't Les Walrond. There is a huge difference in being able to hit an average ML pitcher and being able to hit a AAA pitcher. We all hate Jason Marquis, but he is so much better than your run of the mill AAA pitcher that it's not funny.

Yeah, it's so easy to forget just how good the guys are in the Bigs... Actually stating that Marquis is "so much better" than AAA guys just gives me a renewed appreciation of that!!:)

I think one key point that has been mentioned, but overlooked is a common trend in Pie's career as he has been promoted. At AA and at AAA he struggled badly to adjust in the first half of the season, and after receiving consistent abs he adjusted and started to hit very well for a CF who plays outstanding defense.

Yes this a major league team that needs to win in April as much as it does in September, but the track record of Felix Pie suggests that after early struggles he will adjust. We won't know the answer if he is kept on the bench. Reed Johnson starting today is very telling because I recall, though can't find anything to back this up, that Lou was looking to start Pie today. I am not sure what changed his mind, but I think it is looking more and more likely that Pie will find his way to Iowa sooner rather than later.

I agree with not giving up on him. He is still only 23. I just feel like he isn't ready for the MLB. There is nothing wrong with that. He needs another year in the minors to work on hitting breaking balls. In a year where the cubs can possibly win the world series, I don't want a 23 year old there putting up a .230/.300/.600 line.

Can we please stop doing this? It's really confusing. I'm not sure who started it, but I would like to stop it.

Such a line goes BA/OBP/SLG. So your line looks like this - .230/.300/.300 Your above line would be an interesting, and favorable, line for Felix but I know you didn't mean Felix would OPS .900 at his floor. Let's also assume that all of us here can add OBP and SLG for ourselves.

I'm sorry for the mini-rant, and I don't mean to pick on you, but you are the latest culprit. Back to the hyperbole!

Yes! this bothers me as well

The reactions by the coaches when he hit that home run definitely signal that they want him to succeed probably more than anyone on this board. That was a fun moment.

Post game addendumn to my earlier post, if Pie doesn't get the start against Figueroa tomorrow I am going to be upset. Fontenot is starting to revert back to the hitter he was most of last year. So move DeRosa back into the infield and let Johnson play LF.

I'd have been really worried if Lou started screaming obscenities when Pie hit a 3-run bomb in the 8th.

Cro Mag, still think that Piniella is doing everything he can to wreck Pie's career?

That is already one my fave Cubs moments of the last several yrs. It was great to see Piniella and all the players get excited for Felix. And that was a helluva swing he put on that ball.

Come on. You could tell they handled this differently than other Cubs homers. Everyone in the dugout, including the coaches, looked really excited about it. It was cool to watch.

From what Bruce said in the game thread before the game today, that was the plan even before the HR. So it looks like Pie will get a start tomorrow before Reed starts against the left-hander Wednesday, and then hopefully Pie will get a start Thursday before Reed handles the 3 left-handers over the weekend.

I bet they are. If Pie can be who people think he can be this team will be extremely tough to beat.

The Cubs led the league in defensive efficiency last season. Adding Pie to CF, as well as Fukudome in RF, would make it truly awesome.

this is so true.

dare to dream that Pie, Soto, and Cedeno all live up to potential this year....

Sure it was different. He's a young player that hasn't had much success at this level. Much more exciting than a DLee HR at this point (unless it's a walk off or something).

But WilcoFan's post is a little weird. Their reactions signal that they want him to succeed? Did anyone here really think Lou wanted him to fail? I think the coaches want him to succeed. I (and many others) just don't agree with the way they've been going about it. If this HR earns him more regular ABs, I think that's a pretty stupid reason to get more ABs, but I'll be happy that he's actually seeing the field rather than riding pine.

Finally having a nice at bat and getting rewarded for it by getting more at bats is stupid?

If only we can keep finding a spot for Ronny. I was thrilled to see him at SS tonight, but I fear he's going back to the bench tomorrow unless DeRosa gets a day off.

If you, as a manager, make decisions on who should start based on 1 AB, yes, that is stupid. Do you really want your manager picking the next day's starters based on the last AB of each player from today's game?

It was reported on the ESPN telecast tonight that Dave Keller (minor league hitting coordinator) was called in to work with Pie as well. That's another sign they want him to be successful. Whether they're going about things the right way is debatable, but them wanting him to succeed is not debatable.
