i like having separate forums for transactions and minors and the draft and polls - it keeps things from getting too cluttered. I just don't think there's enough actual baseball talk on this board that doesn't deal with BDB's pajamas to necessitate two different subforums.

I've always been blown away by Henderson's steals record. Cy's win/loss records just don't do it for me because it was a difference in how the game was played. Steals have been around for quite awhile and Henderson was just ridiculous. Someone would have to average 50 SB's for 28 years just to get to his mark. We don't even have one guy steal 50 every season.

But....isn't that just another difference in how the game is played?

Rose's hits record is one of those that is both really impressive and potentially breakable one day. Same with DiMaggio's hitting streak record and Ryan's 7 no-hitters.

This thread is going to have to get split into the Rants forum :-).

Does 100 years without a Championship count as a record, and will it ever be broken?

pedro's the all-time career era+ leader by a pretty significant margin. that'll be unbroken for a long, long time.

Depends on where you set the floor for innings pitched. If you set it at 1,000 like it is on Baseball Reference, Mariano Rivera will take over as the leader soon. He has an ERA+ of 195 in 958.1 innings.

The fact that Pedro is at 160 as a starter is a bit more impressive to me, but no other reliever in the history of the game comes close to Rivera's ERA+ of 195.

I'm always partial to record for least pitches in an inning (3). This record is held by several people

Have you forgotten that Dusty Baker is still a manager of a major league baseball team? As long as he's managing, that record will always be a threat to be broken. :D

Will White pitched 680 innings in 1879. Nobody will pitch half of that again.

Rose's hits record is one of those that is both really impressive and potentially breakable one day.

I'm a big fan of Rose's and his style of play and think he should be in the HOF, but at the end of his career he became the epitome of a stat compiler. He hung around and inserted himself into his own lineup for the sole purpose of getting the record. This was often at his team's own expense because Tony Perez was still hitting .328/.396/.470 in 1985. His last 4 seasons he had 107 hits, 121 hits, 107 hits, and 56 hits and batted a combined .253/.346/.303 and had a whopping 2 home runs in his last 1,748 plate appearances (all of this while playing first base). For comparison, his career numbers are .303/.375/.409.

Regardless, he only has 67 more hits than Cobb and did it in 2,619 more AB's.

Rose got hammered in The Diamond Appraised by Craig Wright. Wright wrote:

"Pete got his all-time hit record in 1985, but he had abused the game in a way that had never been done before. He went far beyond the simple case of letting an older veteran hang on just a moment longer to achieve a major milestone before fading back into whatever role he could earn. Rose passed Cobb by taking advantage of his situation for two, if not three, seasons.

They say one sin leads to another, and I was less surprised when Rose announced he would play again in 1986. Why? Believe it or not, he mentioned Cobb's record for runs scored: "I'm only 95 runs back." I wonder what we should do if he realized he had a shot at the all-time RBI record if he could hang on through age 65.

Well, Rose gave it a try, but a .219 average with no homers in 237 at bats saved Cobb's run record. As it was, Rose still gave himself more at bats than rookie Kal Daniels, who hit .320 and slugged .519 in 181 at bats."

Wouldn't some of it be in site suggestions as well? :D

- Cy Young's Losses

Any discussion of unbreakable baseball records should begin and end with this one.

It's equal with his wins IMO

Nobody is going to stick around long enough, only pitching 35 games per year, to pile up 500+ wins. No way.

barry bonds' 762 career home runs*

*still counting hopefully

I'll put money on it that ARod passes that by the end of the 2013 season

(Assuming bonds does not come back)

If i was an owner with more money than needed I would sign Bonds.

I would then tell the manager to not start or okay him ever and at any pinch hit opportunity put him in only to pull him at the last second. This way his career ends by him quitting.

Broken? 3 outs in an inning from 2 pitches would REALLY be something to remember.

Pitch 0: Pitcher goes to mouth four times while on mound, batter gets free base

Pitch 1: Double play

Pitch 2: Popup

Not bloody likely, but possible.

I was trying to imagine scenarios where this would be a possible outcome, but I wasn't aware of any rule allowing first base to the batter without a pitch being thrown. Thank you for straightening me out. :)
