Remains to be seen if he'll stay thin. Z has a tendency to lose weight in the offseason and steadily gain it back during the season.

Yeah but I think Z never looks really as chubby as Cabrera did and I have never seen Z look as good as Cabrera does now. Cabrera looks like he's in awesome shape. Another difference is Z has never had that much motivation, going from Florida to Detroit is huge.

Great deal. Detroit is gonna be really happy over the length of it I'd say.

And who knows where salaries will be in 8 years. This could be a bargain in 3-4.

Compared to A-Rod, it is a bargain NOW.

Compared to Soriano, Cabrera's contract is an absolute steal. Only an extra 17.3 mil spread out over eight years... and instead of getting an aging player who at his best is only very good, you get a player who is already fantastic, and hasn't even hit his prime yet.

And yet, I would still take Soriano's deal over other comparables like Torii Hunter, Gary Matthews, and the soon to be DH Carlos Lee. Cabrera is taking a deal, that is likely to cause some "groans" among the MLBPA, considering there is a chance, Miggy is leaving upward of $50 or so million on the table. This deal says more about Cabrera willingness to stay in Detroit, then it does anything else.

even when you take the last arby year out of the equation, he's still making less than his MORP according to BP, and that's pretty impressive. especially when you consider that salaries/value are likely to continue to rise. solid work by the tigers on this one.

It's been amazing watching the Tigers the past 4 or 5 years. They went out on a limb and overpaid for Pudge then Maggs (though Maggs did well last year). Those signings were forced since no one would play for them for close to what others were paying since Detroit was so lousy.

Then they started drafting and paying above slot.

Then they started trading. The Shef trade was taking on a old vet and giving up a lot (though at least one of the highly regarded pitchers in that deal has elbow problems I think).

The Rent trade was good, now this one where they not only get an innings eater but a superstar and extend them both. Hell, the extension to Granderson is a good deal too.

No kidding. In '03, who would have thought that going from Florida to Detroit would be a positive change of scenery.

Great deal for the Tigers. He'd get more on the open market.

And crap, I didn't realize how much weight he gained. He really dove into those Twinkie boxes didn't he?

That he did...

I was listening to Mike and Mike and somebody...Gammons or one of the other baseball guys was talking about how good he looked. Funny, if Sammy did that they would have said he was off steroids.

Sammy was skinny to muscular, Cabrera appears to have gone from fat to trim.

AP[/url]"]LAKELAND, Fla. -- Miguel Cabrera and the Detroit Tigers finalized their $152.3 million, eight-year contract on Tuesday, the fourth-largest package among current major leaguers.

Cabrera agreed Jan. 18 to an $11.3 million, one-year contract. The new deal adds $141 million over the following seven seasons.

The third baseman gets $15 million in 2009, $20 million in each of the next two seasons, $21 million each in 2012 and 2013, and $22 million apiece in 2014 and 2015, according to contract terms obtained by The Associated Press. He also receives a limited no-trade clause, similar to that of Tigers teammate Magglio Ordonez.

If he doesn't top .713 ops for this season (barring injury) I'll give everyone that reads this thread a hybrid SUV.
