Chien-Ming Wang has a 8.44ERA this Spring. Erik Bedard has a 9.69ERA. The spring numbers... they mean-a-nothing. Some days a pitcher is on and some days a pitcher is off. Hill was off this time. He was off a few times last year, too. No biggie.

I think it's entirely possible he starts the year in Iowa for this reason that I posted in the game thread:

I'm a little worried about Hill. The most discouraging thing is that, correct me if I'm wrong, all of his starts have been shorter than he wanted. He hasn't really stretched out his arm yet has he? If his next outing is a short one, that would obstensibly mean he wouldn't have gotten the desired amount of innings you want out of a starter heading into the regular season.

Hill has 1 option left, so I'm thinking if he has another short outing (how many times is he scheduled to start?) it's entirely possible that he starts the year out in Iowa to get his arm stronger and the Cubs go to a 4 man rotation early in the year. What is the possiblilty of that

I'm not concerned whatsoever about his ERA. I'm just a tiny bit concerned about the walks. If its blisters, no problem. I just don't want it to be undiagnosed arm trouble.

I've been accused of being a "Hill basher" in the past, unfairly. Although I still believe he is average-to slightly above average at best. He is severely overvalued on this board, but thats just my opinion.

Many around here had some unrealistic expectations for him last year. he had a fine year, but he is still inconsistent and not getting any younger.

I agree, the Cubs need to identify and give more chances to players that are getting younger instead of wasting their time on guys like Hill that are not.

Yeah, 14th best whip in all of baseball, this guy is terrible.

Why are people in love with Ted Lilly while they hate Rich Hill?

Name a player that is getting younger. Name one.

Yeah, sub 4 era, 28 years old, why waste time with a pitcher like that? What a ridiculous statement.

I'm not sure if the last three posts could exaggerate any more than they already do.

Can we try again for more dramatic effect?

NO chance that he starts in Iowa.

Rich will be ok. As you can see by the number of postings, I mostly read and don't post much but I gotta tell ya, this thread has made me laugh out loud. I love the sarc, particularly when it's not too over the top. Subtle, real subtle. :amen:

Up until last year Roger Clemens. Then Baseball went and started testing for steroids.

Is Hill a notorious slow starter in the spring? A lot of curve ball guys struggle during spring training and have to iron out their stuff.

If I remember correctly he didn't walk anyone in ST last year, and was very sharp all Spring.

I wonder if the innings last year got to him a little. It was the first time he had to pitch that many innings in MLB and that might have worn him a little and the sharpness will come back. Imo, his biggest problem was challenging hitters, once he isn't trying to be cute he has a lot of success.
