Mesa, ARIZ. – The Chicago Cubs today announced their second round of roster cuts, reducing the roster from 49 to 42 players.

Right-handed pitcher Juan Mateo and outfielder Jake Fox have been optioned to Triple-A Iowa while right-handed pitcher Jeff Samardzija has been optioned to Double-A Tennessee.

Three non-roster invitees have been reassigned to minor league camp: left-handed pitcher Ed Campusano, infielder Luis Figueroa and catcher JD Closser. In addition, right-handed pitcher Shingo Takatsu has been granted his unconditional release.

Chicago’s spring roster of 42 players consists of 21 pitchers (two non-roster invitees), three catchers (one non-roster invitee), 11 infielders (four non-roster invitees) and seven outfielders (one non-roster invitee).

No real shockers there. Mateo and Samardzija have to go down to get their arm stretched out to be able to start. Fox has no spot on the team, and most of the other players were filler anyway who were there just to add innings anyway (with the possible exception of Campusano).

GO RIDDANCE SHINGO! THAT IS WHAT YOU GET FOR BLOWING THAT SAVE AND I DON'T CARE IF IT SPLIT SQUAD SPRING TRAINING GAME...YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME! HELLO! YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME..NO EXCUSE I AM STILL MAD ABOUT THAT

I thought Fox would be a last cut, being that he's been the #1 callup before when needing a RH bat. Probably means the Cubs want to get a good look at guys like Patterson, Cedeno, etc. in the OF.

They might also want to get Derosa some OF work too.

Have to think Pie's injury bought Fuld a few more days.

Anyone else surprised how bad Cedeno has been? I'm not.

No, its still early and it is spring training...but for a guy that really needed to have a good showing to earn a spot on the team, he has been dissappointing.

Conversely, Cintron is doing a good job of convincing people he doesn't stink.

I'm a little surprised that Closser was cut. Does that mean they feel comfortable enough with McGehee behind the plate when they have SS games?

Who knows if Lou is still mad at Fox though. Fox got yanked out of the game immediately after one of his at-bats last August and never got another at-bat for the rest of the season. I'm not sure that he is going to get many chances with the team.

Why, what happened to set Lou off?

No one knows for sure, but the speculation was that Fox wasn't being as patient as Lou liked. Lou started him one day against the Giants. Fox saw a total of 5 pitches in 3 at-bats. After the end of the 3rd at-bat, Lou was visibly upset and pulled him from the game. The next day, it was reported he would be sent back to the minors, and he ended up not getting back in a game in the majors the rest of the year.

You spend years being led to believe swing early and swing often is the only way to make it and then a Cubs manager actually punishes you for impatience. Must be confusing.

it could be a lot worse. imagine the underclassmen at Michigan having to move from Lloyd Carr's to Rich Rodriguez's offensive scheme

Koyie Hill's still around.

True but that means that McGehee is the 4th catcher or the 2nd if there's a ss game.

And not that I see that as problematic, but can't guys who have been reassigned to the minor league camp still appear in the "A" games? Doesn't it just mean that they've officially been eliminated from any shot at the final 25-man roster?
