There are reports coming out of New York (on ESPN News) that the length of the contract has become an obstacle. I guess the deadline is tomorrow around 5:30 pm. I for one, hope that Johan comes to his senses and realizes that if he waits, he'll get more money on the open market. I hope he nixes any posssible deal... hang in there Cub fans, you never know---it still might be possible. I'm not holding my breath but it would be pretty funny if Santana "just said no" to the Mets.

They'll get it done. Can you imagine the carnage that could be done if the Mets (Minaya, specifically) got all this way with Santana, only to lose him because of money? Minaya would have to put his resignation NOW, and he would never be accepted back in NY ever again. In other words...expect it to get done. Too much is on the line now.

People haggle over contracts all the time. As long as one side isn't embarrassing the other side with unreasonable numbers, this stuff usually works itself out. It's in the best interest for both parties to come to an agreement.

It will get done.

it is in johans best interest to sign a deal that would be below his market price in a year?

Are you asking me this question? Where did I say that?

You said it was in the best interest of both parties to come to an agreement. How is it in the best interest of Santana to compromise with the Mets?

A "contract" agreement. Not a "meet in the middle" agreement. The Mets can attempt to haggle down the price, but that doesn't mean the Mets can't cave in and give Santana what he wants if he won't budge off of his demands.

In other words, it's in the best interests of both parties to get a contract signed, whether that means the Mets cave or Santana caves or they meet somewhere in the middle is immaterial.

In other words, it's in the Mets' best interest to sign him, so they will cave. It is not in Johan's best interests to sign unless he gets fair value. It's not in both their best interests. The Mets have little to no leverage. Johan can just wait it out another year in Minnesota and get a monster deal on the open market.

Sure, assuming Santana's arm doesn't fall off between now and then. It's in Santana's best interest to get as much as he can now while the value is there. As I stated before, whether someone caves on the demands is immaterial. I fully expect the Mets to cave rather than Santana.

Usually this is true. Duh, that's why pitchers routinely sign contracts prior to free agency. Most pre-free-agent pitchers do find it in their best interest to sign deals that will be below market price in a year, because they understand that there is risk that they will get hurt; in which case the deal could end up well above market price in a year.

So he wants $150/5, and next year he might well get that. But he may well decide that it is in his best interest to go for $125/5 now, just in case his arm goes bad.

It's in Santana's best interest to drag this thing to the last minute in an attempt to get as much as possible.

And he certainly is doing that right now. Only 1 hour left.

20 min. now...i figure they'll announce the signing just before the deadline.

Hendry just said, on CTL, that he inquired about Santana through the Twins and was told from the organization (because he did not have the right to contact the player directly, that Johan would only waive his NTC for a team in the East that trained in FL.

BTW, he also said that the Cubs have no intentions of trading DeRosa even if they acquire another player (read Roberts). There goes that DeRosa rumor...
