He said that Cedeno would likely be gone in a Roberts trade and Cintron would interest us as a backup if that happens. He also said we are searching another starter (yay), and that Lieber is a possibility (boo). We're also looking for a righthanded OF who can play all 3 positions (umm why trade Pagan)?

How about we dont give up Cedeno in a deal for Roberts. If we do, and Theriot/Cintron are our SS's for the year, we have a new black hole on offense.

Colon has been topping out at just over 90mph in his winter league starts. If he can continues to progress well , I would rather have him than Lieber on a one year deal. Cintron? no thanks.

Anyone else have any interest in Kris Benson on a one year deal thats has more to do with his upside than Anna coming along.

Does she still follow him around after they divorced?

Cedeno/Theriot is also very likely to be a black hole. I don't think it matters all that much.

New?

Please define new.

Yea sorry I worded that wrong. Should have read "still have a black hole at SS". Not really sure why I said new.

Well Cedeno has at least put up numbers(albeit in the minors) that suggest he could be something other than a black hole. Theriot/Cintron however, would just be brutal.

Although all this wouldnt matter if we could get Roberts, and slide DeRosa to SS. But that wont happen.

I'd love it if Cedeno proved me wrong, but I just don't expect too much out of him.

DeRosa may be able to fill in from time to time at the SS position but I don't think he is capable of playing it on a full time basis.

We should just trade for Nomar!

I'm pretty sure they're not divorced.

If they sign Lieber again and assign him #32, then my jersey in the back of my closet becomes relevant again!

SIGN LIEBER!!!

He'd have to fight Ward in a cage match for the number. My money would be on D. Ward.

I'd rather have Colon than Lieber, as much as I like Jon. Don't have a great reason why, just feels like it would be better bet.

No to Cintron. Not much out there FA wise:

How about Damion Easley as utility IFer/OFer?:

Agree with everything. Easley is 38, but if Derosa isn't gonna play SS, Easley can. Easley played over 200 innings at SS as recently as 2006. Can't really field well, but neither can Theriot.

Colon is a much higher reward, will likely being the same risk as Leiber. Trade is still probably the way to go, though.

Leiber? is Hendry trying to reunite the entire 1998 pitching staff? should we pull Tapani out of retirement?

Lieber wasn't on the 1998 squad. He was traded to the Cubs for Brant Brown after that season.

you get my point though. first Trachsel, then Leiber....let's stop tripping down memory lane here and get a pitcher who has actually been good in the last 5 years

I don't think Lieber's a particularly good option, but he's been remakably consistent in being right about an average starting pitcher, and he has had to pitch in Philadelphia the last 3 years which has hurt his numbers. Philly also has had him pitch some innings in relief in both 2005 and 2007, and that hurt his numbers He'd have an ERA between 4.5 and 5.0, but he wouldn't have much chance to be truly terrible like Dempster might be. I'd prefer Marshall over him, but we don't know right now if Marshall is going to be on the roster in March or if he's going to be given a chance if he does.

It really depends on how much he costs. If he came in and won the job though, I don't think that would be too bad. He wouldn't be a huge asset, but he wouldn't be a huge hole either.

Word is that Colon can't hit 90 in winter ball. I'd rather have Lieber than Colon with no heat.

If we're looking for a starter, then Lou must not be too enamored with using Dempster in the rotation.

Vance,

That thought occured to me as well, but then something else hit me. Maybe Lou is not too enamored with using Marquis in the rotation.
