Just heard he agreed to be the manager at Peoria again this year. Does anyone think he's been promised serious consideration to be Lou's replacement when he retires? I can't imagine he would decide to manage another year in Single A ball if he wasn't given assurances that he has an excellent chance at managing the Big Ballclub in the near future......

Personally I think Ryno would be a great pick as he loves all things Cubs and would be a calming influence on the team ala a Joe Torre type of manager.

Should Ryno be the next manager of our beloved Cubs?

It depends. Sandberg has made some comments that make me leery of his managing style, but that was from before he started managing. I seen quite a few games in Peoria last year, and personally I liked what I seen. Ryno didnt give up alot of outs, and didnt really play small ball, which surprised me. Hopefully after he gains some experience, he changes his mentality from his earlier comments, because Id love to see him manage the Cubs, since he was one of my favorite players ever.

The minor leagues are supposed to be about the young kids. Helping the kids become major leaguers. He's only out for himself, just like he always was. All he ever cared about was winning - winning - winning.

A real LOSER off-the-field too. No wonder he's headed for a second DIVORCE. LOUSY family man.

The Hall of Fame does not make you a good person. He let it go to his head. I hope to GOD he never ever manages the CUBS. I'll become a Whie Sox fan.

IT'S NICE TO BE IMPORTANT BUT IT'S MORE IMPORTANT TO BE NICE!!!!

So, no minor league manager should have any career aspirations? I wouldn't want my youngster's around someone who at least doesn't have some motivation. Sure you need to develop the talent but you also have to be about winning. What do you want? A little league type coach who makes sure everyone gets in the game and gets some playing time. This is professional sports not 10 and under.

If I had to guess, I would say a big part of the reason why he agreed to go back to single A is because other teams weren't exactly banging down his door with better opportunities.

Ryno was a great player and fun to watch. I hold no expectations for his future as a coach/manager.

Welcome to the forum Cindy Sandberg. Still in "close touch" with Raffy Palmeiro? Ever retire your skin tight corncob dress?

I would say the biggest reason why he decided to go back to single A is the fact that Lou Pinellas contract ends rather soon, and he knows by showing loyalty, and putting in his time, it will result in him being an actual candidate to replace Lou.

Wasn't that the feedback he had received when he interviewed?

Pretty much. Hendry told him he needed to put in his time before he would be considered a real candidate. If Hendry is still here when Lou's contract is up, Id almost be willing to bet Sandberg gets the job, or possible even Jody Davis.

Assuming Piniella manages out his contract, and there's no disaster scenario with the team, I'd say Trammell has the inside edge, then Ryno, then Jody. A lot of this depends on where the team is in a success cycle.

Yea I forgot about Trammell.

I like Trammell, but I hope they give Ryno a fair shot if/when they do interviews....I'd hate to see them give it to Trammell just because he's Lou's bench coach.

Ryno's was my childhood hero so please excuse my bias......

That's assuming Trammell is still with the Cubs at that time. He could have an offer to manage a team by that time. Assuming any of the Cubs coaching positions open up after the '08 season, I'd be curious to see if Ryno or Davis are under consideration.

Trammell seems to be a good option, but does anyone know what his style was when he was in Detroit? I'd like to get to know more about him before anointing him Lou's eventual replacement.

If Sandberg is serious about becoming a manager some day, I think he's going to have to get more time managing under his belt. Moreover, he's also going to have to eventually end up being a coach at the major league level so he gets a better handle on how to deal with major leaguers on an everyday basis.

I think Sandberg has the intelligence and ability to manage some day. I don't know if he actually will, but he could be a good candidate a few years down the road.
