Marshall for Hamilton straight up? Why not?

Perhaps ask the Reds to include Freel. Marshall, Fontenot, & Pagan for Hamilton & Freel. Add a lower level prospect, if necessary.

Platoon Hamilton/Murton in RF and Pie/Freel in CF. Two regular lefties in the lineup and they add some speed/versatility with Freel. The deal only adds about $2.5 mil. to payroll.

Work out a deal for Tejada offering some combination of Cedeno/Patterson/Ohman/Eyre/Veal/Hart. Call it an off season.

I agree with you. I don't understand the posters who would disagree with this deal unless you're going to include Marshall in some other trade package. Marshall is a spare part on the Cubs. Hamilton fills a need for the Cubs. What else do we need to consider?

Another no-brainer:

The Cubs are also in talks regarding Nate McLouth. Sullivan thinks McLouth would come cheap - for a reliever like Carmen Pignatiello, Neal Cotts, or Will Ohman. Damn, that's cheap. We learned today that the Giants, Padres, and Marlins like McLouth; Sullivan adds the Braves to the mix as well.

Giving up Piggy or Cotts for McLouth should be done immediately.

Oh, heck yea. If the rumor is real, make it happen Jim.

Of course, given the lack of pitching out there, Marshall may be generating more offers than we realize.

Hamilton really needs to get out of the Reds organization.

Dusty would probably have him over to the house to listen to new age music and burn some "incense".

I'm not sure we'd want Hamilton replacing Pie "against tough lefties". He was a complete black hole against LHP last year. .583 OPS, struck out in over 1/3 of his PA's, and he still had a .350 BABIP against them. Granted, it was only 80 PA's, but still.

Trade Marshall for Hamilton

Platoon Hamilton/Murton in RF. Hamilton was .319/.391/.637/1.028, 18 HR 43 RBI in 256 PA's vs. righties last year. Murton was .319/.386/.505/.892, 3 HR 9 RBI in 101 PA's vs. lefties.

Sign Fukudome for CF

Trade Pie for SP or SS help

Boom.

tough actin' tinactin!

well done.

Either one of those deals. (Useless Cotts for McLouth and Marshall for Hamilton) seem too good to be true. It's a couple of our guys that the Cubs continue to take a dump on and somehow we're getting actual players for them? Incredible.

What's going to be more incredible is that Hendry is gonna pass because he's only focused on Fukodome. Then when he whiffs on him, it's Shawn Green time baby.

There is plenty of room in the outfield for both Hamilton and Fukudome. And there is still potential for room in the budget for a Haren/Pie and Hill swap.

Temper those expectations.

Yeah, I know. Hendry is the GM. Expect the worst.

But, how much would you like to see Hamilton, Fukudome and Haren. I'd pee my pants with glee. I wouldn't care who played SS.

Yeah, if those trades are on the table you have to take them. Soriano, Hamilton, Fukudome is a great OF. McCloth becomes a solid 4th OF. Pie can be traded for pitching help, though I'd still like to keep Hill.

I'd like to keep Hill, also. But, I'd deal him for Haren.

Realistically, the Cubs probably wouldn't go after Haren. But, if they did get Fukudome and Hamilton, Pie and/or Murton would likely be moved for pitching.

Levine just claimed that there have been no discussions/no interest in Josh Hamilton, and he brought up his troubled past as what seemed to be a speculative reason.

Hah. Now we know what trumps a speedy LH power bat.

I guess it comes down to who you believe more, Sullivan or Levine?

Is there an option C?

If they're talking Hamilton for Marshall, I'd do it. I wouldn't consider Hill or Marmol though. Does sound too good to be true, but with some of the pitching out there Marshall might have more value than we think as was mentioned.

I hate to trade young pitching and think Marshall has done reasonably well, but this could be one of those "smaller" deals that makes a huge impact.

Dare I even say that Hamilton and someone like McLouth would allow us to trade Pie and Hill for Santana? If MN wants Ellsbury and Lester from Boston, wouldn't that be a comparable package. That would prevent us from being over loaded with lefty starters (which has been mentioned as something Hendry would think about). It would probably take us out of getting Fukudome, but would that major upgrade in pitching (Santana, Z, Lilly)be enough to improve the team with a minor upgrade in offense(SS, CF, and RF being manned by Riot, Cedeno, McLouth, Hamilton, and Murton)?

You are forgetting that Santana has an NTC and he'll need to be signed to an extension, which will likely be in the neighborhood of 6/150m. The Cubs do not have that kind of money at their disposal.

That's why I did say we wouldn't get Fukodome, but I agree even though it's not my money. It's more likely that almost any team is going to wait and sign Santana in the offseason than give too much in terms of prospects now and give him the major money.

It sounds like a deal is just about done for Santana, with 4 or 5 players going to Minnesota. Boston can afford to offer up what Santana is looking for.

I heard they made the pick and then traded the player to the Reds.
Again, as has been repeated over and over on this board since the trade was made, the Cubs didn't choose to draft Hamilton and trade him. They weren't going to draft anybody, so they worked out a deal with the Reds where they'd draft an unnamed player and immediately trade him to the Reds. It wasn't until the Cubs' turn to draft that the Reds identified the player as Hamilton, and the Cubs drafted him for the sole purpose of trading him to the Reds.
