I've brought up his name before, but others weren't sure he was available. According to the Cincinnati Enquirer:

Reds could deal Bailey and Hamilton?

The Reds have some tempting prospects to dangle, such as Homer Bailey and first baseman Joey Votto, and even last season's feel-good story, outfielder Josh Hamilton. "There's risk and there's reward," Krivsky said last week. "There are two ways of looking at it. It doesn't matter what transaction, there's a chance it won't work out." -- Cincinnati Enquirer

Hamilton would look great in a platoon with Murton and subbing for Pie against tough lefties. Don't know what the Reds would want (besides more relief pitchers  ), but he would certainly help the Cubs.

No kidding. Any half-assed GM could put together a team of cast-offs from the teams in this divison to beat any team in this division.

7:12 p.m., from Jerry Crasnick

• The Reds need pitching, but they don't have a lot of money left after signing closer Francisco Cordero to a five-year deal. So Cincinnati is talking trade with a bunch of teams here in Nashville and using some of its young position players as bait for a starter. Jay Bruce is out of the question, and Joey Votto would be tough to get, but the Reds are listening on third baseman Edwin Encarnacion and center fielder Josh Hamilton. The Cubs are a natural fit for Hamilton, but Sean Marshall isn't likely to get it done. One possible fit for Encarnacion: the Giants, who may need a third baseman if incumbent Pedro Feliz declines the team's salary arbitration offer.

Offer Marmol.

Can somebody give me the quick recap of why Hamilton sometimes gets a bad rep? I know about the steroids thing, but does he have major injury problems in his past ? Or was there just some minor injuries last year and i'm just mistaken. He would definately be a welcome addition though, even if he's injury plagued.

I thought he had some history with drugs in the past, but I might be wrong?

i don't think it's steroids, it's that he had a hardcore drug problem with drugs more serious than steroids.

battled major addictions to drugs and alcohol. turned his life around the past few years. has a world of talent and I think he'll be a great player for some time. and yes, offer marmol if marshall doesn't get it done. he's a reliever after all.

And the Reds are addicted to relievers, after all.

Wut?

Hamilton has never been accused of roids.

He had a problem with coke.

I know that now, 2 people have already mentioned that. I knew it was something and saw "suspended for banned substances" and forgot which it was.

Josh Hamilton-OF-Reds Dec. 3 - 10:24 pm et

The Reds are listening to offers for Josh Hamilton and Edwin Encarnacion.

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick thinks the Reds will make a play for Hamilton, but that Sean Marshall won't be enough to get a deal done. Rich Hill would, but the Cubs shouldn't part with him for less than a sure thing. Encarnacion would make sense for the Giants, Twins and Phillies, among others.

IMO what hamilton did in 90 games after not playing ball since 2002 is nothing short of amazing. Keep in mind, until opening day last year he only had 23 games above single A. If he can stay healthy, and that has been an issue throughout his career, he will only continue to get better.

Not only did he have major drug addiction issues, but he actually quit baseball for 4 years I believe. The closest he came to playing ball was mowing baseball fields. He got some help, got things turned around, was amazing in half a season last year.

I want to ask about this again just to make sure I'm clear on what happened. Did the Cubs pick Hamilton and then trade him for money, or did they trade the pick for money and then the Reds picked Hamilton?

You can't officially trade the pick before you make it. The Cubs weren't planning to use the pick to draft anyone, and so they agreed to a trade to pick whoever the Reds wanted and then effectively sell that person to the Reds. The Reds gave the Cubs their choice just seconds before the Cubs picked. Then the Cubs picked Hamilton, and then immediately turned around and dealt him to the Reds as they had already promised to do.

what the hell, there's a person out there who thinks hill for hamilton would be a fair deal? i know he's a special case, but man, 300 major league ab's at age 26 and he has a terrible history.

i guess i probably think less of hamilton than just about everyone else here.

He never quit baseball, he was suspended. And it was more like 2 or 3 years, not 4.
