Cubs GM Jim Hendry said Sunday that he was not pursuing both Erik Bedard and Brian Roberts in a deal with the Orioles.

Hendry didn't deny discussing a Roberts deal with Baltimore, but Bedard wasn't on the table and he said there was no truth the rumored nine-player deal supposedly killed by Orioles owner Peter Angelos.

I read that as, "the Orioles have 2 players available worth trading for. Hendry is not interested in the one that would be the most significant upgrade for the Cubs."

And Phil Rogers has a source that says we are trying to get Bedard and Roberts. The deal would include Pie among others.

Who knows what to think anymore.

Though it's doubtful we'd get that upgrade without giving up Hill, thus pretty much negating any upgrade.

Here We Go Again

Despite GM Jim Hendry's protestations, the Chicago Tribune's Phil Rogers says the Cubs and Orioles are talking about a massive deal involving Erik Bedard and Brian Roberts.

According to Rogers' very highly placed source, Orioles owner Peter Angelos did shoot the deal down at the end of last week, but talks were back on again recently. Rogers believes the Cubs could send Felix Pie to Baltimore and bring in Marlon Byrd to replace him.

The Rangers are believed to be asking for Sean Gallagher and Matt Murton from the Cubs for Marlon Byrd, the Chicago Tribune reports.

If the Rangers had offered Byrd for either a year ago, they would have been laughed out of the room. We still don't see Byrd being worth as much as either, but the Rangers are in a rare position of strength and might as well capitalize on it.

Byrd isn't worth Gallagher alone, much less Gallagher and Murton. I'm really not sure I'd do Murton for Byrd, except for the fact that Murton is without a position on this team.

They can have Fuld and Dempster if they like...

If Hendry makes that trade I'll personally kill him.

:shock: [-X =;

Why can I imagine Hendry at least considering this?

All this talk about Bedard has me wondering what happened to the Cincinnati Reds and Dodgers talks with Bedard.

Also, why have the Johan Santana talks completely died?

Seems to be more and more teams playing hardball. Every rumor has involved seemingly every top prospect imaginable. Seems as if teams are more willing to get the draft compensation than to "settle" for a package just to get rid of a player.

wow Murton and Gallegher thats a laugher. If Hendry finds a way to get Roberts and Bedard I would much prefer we sign Kenny Lofton, Brad Wilkerson, Shannon Stewart than give up more pitching depth for a guy with one good season under his belt like Byrd. He doesn't seem like much of a threat on the basebaths whats his defense and arm like?

I hope we can get all 3, that would be amazing! Here is what I would propose:

A) Cubs get Bedard and Roberts

Orioles get Pie, Hill, Gallagher, Cedeno, Patterson, Veal, and Dempster

B) Cubs get Marlon Byrd

Rangers get Murton and Marquis

C) Sign Lofton

Cubs rotation: Zambrano, Bedard, Lilly, Lieber, Marshall

Lineup: Roberts, Fukudome, Lee, Ramirez, Soriano, Soto, Byrd/Lofton, Theriot

The good thing is that I'm not too worried about Murton+Gallagher for Byrd, because I don't recall Rogers ever calling a trade correctly. If Rogers has any sources, I don't think they've ever been right. What Rogers calls sources is likely the sounds his ass makes while farting.

There is no way this gets done though, I can't see Angelos picking any package we offer.

I like this much better.

Is Burnett going to come out of the pen? I do love an idea where we can get Burnett, Greene, Bedard and Roberts without giving up Pie or Hill though :)

There is no way anybody in the NL could compete with that rotation

The only problems with this:

1) The Orioles probably wouldn't take all 7 of those players straight up for Bedard, let alone three. There isn't enough star power for them to do it when they have better offers from other teams.

2) Offer what for Greene? Let's say the Orioles are unbelievably crazy and accept Pie, Gallagher, and Murton for Bedard. That leaves nothing that the Padres would want for Greene. They are a possible playoff team, and he's pretty much their only SS with SS's being quite a scarcity. They aren't going to give him away unless they get some great talent back, and the Cubs wouldn't have it.

Peavy, Young, Prior, Maddux, Wolf (I know, not likely)

Zito, Cain, Lincecum, Lowry, 5th starter

Those could compete, but not sure if either surpass that rotation.

CCP, I pretty much agree with your assessment, I was just trying to alter what was already there to something a little more appealing.

Giving up Hill to get Bedard makes no sense. They'd need to add Bedard without losing Hill to improve the starting staff.

Getting Byrd doesn't thrill me. I'd rather they just get Lofton.

Adding Roberts at the cost( at least on the field) of DeRo, while keeping Theriot in the lineup doesn't help offensively as much as replacing Theriot with someone good and keeping DeRo.

I was only trying to tweat his proposal somewhat, not coming up with one that I thought was any more acceptable to all the teams involved.

it's funny that the only ones advocating derosa to stay as a starter & as soriano to stay in the leadoff spot are message board posters. Steve Stone, Jim Hendry, Len Kasper & Piniella all are in favor of derosa being a super sub w/ soriano moving down the lineup as he is not a good fit at leadoff in this lineup. This is not so much about adding roberts as about adding a natural leadoff hitter. Len Kasper on the score even hinted today that fuko may be looked at to lead off if roberts or another leadoff hitter is added. That's the first i've heard this so it is very clear that people in the know (not message board posters) are advocating for soriano to move down in the order.

Oy veh.

Leadoff hitter is not a position.
