Somebody asked him yesterday if Henry was looking at anybody else to acquire at the moment, and Bruce replied that they liked Lieber.

Ah. Depending on how much he'd take, I'd go for that. I prefer him in the rotation over Dempster.

I'd be interested in Lieber as a non-roster player, and perhaps if we trade away a couple of our other staff candidates. But barring a trade, I'm not sure I'd be interested in giving him a guaranteed contract that locked him onto the staff regardless of performance.

Barring a trade, we've got 10 roster locks at present: Dempster and Marquis (unknown roles), Z, Hill, Lilly, (3 certain starters), Wood, Howry, Marmol, Wuertz, Eyre (5 certain relievers.)

Ten roster locks leaves two open pitching spots.

Current 8 candidates: Marshall, Hart, Gallagher (rotation candidates), Cotts, Pignatiello (lefty relief options), Lahey, Ascanio, and Petrick (righty relief options). (Am I missing somebody else?)

Unless the staff gets thinned via trade, I'd be hesitant to sign Lieber and reduce the number of open spots to only one. I think there's a good chance that at least two of those 8 candidates will be more preferable on the staff than Lieber.

Also, Lieber has made only two relief appearances since the Cubs acquired him in 1998. Not sure how interested he'd be or how well suited he'd be for a relief role, in the event that two out of Marshall/Gallagher/Hart/Marquis/Dempster outpitch him for a rotation spot.

I have the same kind of concern with any of these lightning in a bottle suggestions (Colon, etc..) I don't want to guarantee any of them a spot on the roster, in case they aren't any good and some of our own guys step up nicely.

I think I'm coming down with my first case of thread fatigue.

I feel all.....drained...and empty inside.

Marshall and Gallegher are probably both gonna be dealt before the season. Dempster has vaule to teams as a closer or back end of the rotation starter. Also there has been plenty of whispers about Hendry trying to find a taker for Marquis.

Were interested in Cameron?

FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal believes Mike Cameron could soon sign with the Yankees or Brewers.

The Yankees were saying they wouldn't bring in a starting center fielder even if they dealt Melky Cabrera, but that was just more deception. It is a surprise that they'd perhaps put in a bid for Cameron before trading Cabrera. Rosenthal seems to believe that Cabrera could go to Cubs, Reds, Braves, Royals or Pirates in return for prospects. The Cubs also have some level of interest in Cameron, but he's more likely to get multiple years elsewhere.

If this keeps on like this, I'm going to be tempted to come up with another scenario where we can acquire Adam Dunn.

or how about starting a thread on whether "clutch" hitting exists since that's never been discussed here.

Jon Leiber isn't a bad option. Seriously.

So the thread finally surpassed 100 pages. Woot.

Anything new or is the deal still "close"?

Yes, it's one day closer to being done or not being done. In other words, most of what was published or broadcast yesterday was nonsense. The Cubs would still like Roberts. They are not trading Hill, Pie or Colvin for him. As I said yesterday, they're willing to give up some combination of Gallagher-Marshall-Cedeno for him, and that's it. The names of Hill, Marmol, Pie and Colvin are what the Orioles would be asking for Bedard, and the Cubs aren't in on any Bedard deal.

Mr. Miles,

While you say "the Cubs aren't in on any Bedard deal," are you of the opinion that they should be pursuing him?

Thanks,

Hoops

He'd be a nice addition, to be sure. But I've been told the Cubs are not players for Bedard.

PLEASE don't open up that can of worms, or this thread will eclipse 200 pages in no time flat.

Are they in the market for any starters besides Jon Lieber, Bruce?

If Hendry is able to get Roberts for Marshall, Gallegher,Cedeno , he might go for it and deal Pie as part of a package to get an upgrade at short or a top of the rotation starter. Cameron isn't a terrible option. He is still a great defender with a strong arm and he provides some speed/power but nothing in terms of average/OBP.

Roberts

Soranio

Lee

Ramirez

Fukodome

Cameron

Soto

Theriot

If Hendry where able to swing a deal for Khali Greene and prospects that lineup suddenly looks like a World Series contender not just a lineup trying to win the NL central. I'm assuming Hendry snags someone for the starting along the lines of Burnett, Colon, Lieber.

Lieber is a bad option, I mean really, look at his numbers the past two years, not really good. He's also in his late 30's, regression is the norm at that age.

Lieber's been about league average with regards to ERA the last couple years. Playing in front of our defense, he'd probably look even better. My only concern is the increase in the walk rater last year, but I'm guessing that had something to do with returning from injury.

Has this thread become the random chat thread yet?

If so, here goes....

Pardon my ignorance, but why do so many people, Tupac included apparently, feel that IMB needs to be freed? To what extend is he unfree right now?
