I wouldn't mind Pie for Roberts at all. Until Pie shows some semblance of plate discipline at any level, I'd much rather keep Murton if it's believed Fukudome can show himself to be even adequate at CF.

I would rather keep Murton than Pie, too. However, we could find a lot better value for Pie/Gallagher that Brian freaking Roberts.

For instance, Pie/Gallagher would be a real nice start on a Khalil Greene trade.

I know PetCo is not a hitter friendly park, but why is everyone salivating at the prospect of having a guy who also put up a .322 OBP on the road last year?

Acquiring Khalil Greene would mean that we would have close to an Alfonso Soriano quality hitter at shortstop.

That would be a very, very good thing.

And that's a good point. And the Cubs wouldn't have to pay Soriano money for that production.

Basically you could have .320s OBP in the 8th spot with 20 steals. Or you could have .320s in the 8th spot with 20 HRs. And you get the best defensive SS in the NL.

If SD is shopping him (and I have no idea why they would), Jim would be an idiot not to get in on it. Keep in mind that moving from Petco to Wrigley would inflate his stats dramatically. Replacing Theriot with Greene makes the Cubs the clear favorite in the Central.

But again, I have no idea why the Padres would do this.

From one of the Orioles insiders:

Some stuff

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Read into this as little or as much as you want. This is what my guy told me today:

The front office is very happy with the Tejada return. The feel Scott is a real sleeper and may well put up #s in excess of Miggy. The young pitchers will not be rushed.

Everything is on hold with Bedard due to conflicting reports on where Kuroda will end up. Lots of reports that he's selected LA but last last evening reports started to surface that he's choosing the M's. Appears they may have gone a 4th year and Washington has no state income tax which placed another million per year in his pocket.

IF LA loses out on Kuroda, Bedard most likely will land there. In the package will be Kemp of Kershaw, not both. The front office may be leaning towards a package of Either, Kershaw, Hu, and another pitcher.

The current Reds offer for Bedard is said to be Bailey, Hamilton, and a shortstop prospect named Loo. Most likely they'll add a 4th player if the deal gets close.

Lots of concern over the SS position. We had an offer for the Astros SS but he choose the Twins.

He told me he doesn't think Roberts will get traded.

Mora was very, very upset about the Tejada trade. He'll mostly be gone even if we have to eat some contract.

Still looking at signing a closer type.

That's all folks!

Orioles radio had an interview with MacPhail tonight. In the thread, a poster said:

Later in the show, Jim Hunter said a friend of his who is a beat reporter in Chicago called him and told him that the Cubs are "dead set on getting BOTH Bedard and Roberts in a deal".

Personally not getting my hopes up.

I think we have the pieces for Bedard, but including Roberts in a deal is going to porbably cost too much. A deal of Pie/Marmol/Gallagher/Patterson/Maybe Murton for just Bedard (depending on if they think they'll have use for Murton)ranks right up there withthe Kershaw or Kemp/Hu/LaRoche deals i've heard possible or the Bailey/Votto/3rd prospect's(posssibly Hamilton).

Bedard and Roberts would be sweet, as long as Rich Hill isn't even discussed.

I don't think it's possible to get both Bedard and Roberts without giving up Hill.

Just gonna work down the list of our most valuable young trade chips, starting after Hill...

Pie

Marmol

Soto

Gallagher

Colvin

Ceda

Veal

Hart

Cedeno

EPatt

Wuertz

Marshall

Then we start getting to lower-minors guys like Huseby, Suarez, Hernandez... the kind of guys we wont get much value for, simply because they're so far out.

If we were to cut Soto out of that list, and give them everybody from Cedeno up, we might be able to get both Roberts and Bedard... but we'd be shooting ourselves in the foot as far as trying to acquire a CF via trade to replace Pie.

I'm really at the point that I just don't want to see a deal of any kind with Baltimore since we aready hae Bedard and Roberts in Hill and DeRosa. Just focus on trading for an upgrade at SS, Hendry.

Regarding Khalil Greene, remember that OBP isn't the only thing our lineup needs to upgrade; despite playing in a hitter-friendly park (in a division full of them, no less), the Cubs were 8th in the NL in SLG% last year. Granted having Soriano for that month while he was hurt might've bumped us up a spot (at most), but the fact remains we were nearly as power-starved last season as we were on-base starved. The signing of Fukudome addresses the latter; inserting Greene as an upgrade over Theriot addresses the former. While we wouldn't necessarily gain OBP in that switch, the difference in SLG% would be massive, and would definitely fit in our lineup as that extra power would capitalize on the upgraded OBP in the spots higher up in the lineup.

Put Greene at 7th (ahead of Pie and the P spot) and I'd venture he could drive in 90 next year. He'd also upgrade our defense at SS, which while not a major consideration taking into account the flyball staff we have (sans Marquis, and that's only on good days), definitely should factor in.

It would help if Greene is actually available.

Yes, that'd help our demanding of him in trade, wouldn't it? But Meph says he's available! And for Prior! So Hendry is a fat jerk!

To be fair, since then we've seen the Tejada trade, the Haren trade, and now the Kuroda signing. Haren and Kuroda were seemingly dictating the terms of the Bedard trade... and since he's now expected to move quick, and since Tejada is gone already, we should see something pretty quick after the Bedard deal.

This is true. Seems like the dominoes are falling.

As previously stated, we've been hearing that other trades need to happen first for Angelos to realize he needs to approve a Roberts deal for rebuilding.

Am I the only one who thought a Roberts deal was right around the corner after Miggy got dealt to Houston? Maybe Hendry is going after Bedard / Roberts package and thats the hold up? Edited by mdwilla

Naw, it was rumored that Roberts would be traded after BOTH Bedard and Tejada.

Completely random 3-way that would never happen but should:

Orioles trade: Bedard/Roberts

Orioles receive:Bailey or Cuetto/Votto/Pie/Gallagher/Cedeno

Reds trade: Bailey or Cuetto/Votto/Hamilton (rumored area for Bedard currently)

Reds receive: Bedard/Fuld/midlevel prospect from Cubs

Cubs trade: Pie/Cedeno/Fuld/Gallagher/mid level prospect (or Ceda if needed)

Cubs get: Hamilton/Roberts

Orioles fans seem to like Hamilton but would rather go for someone a little younger (even though Hamilton isn't really that old). They are almost demanding Pie for Roberts, so we give them that with the help of the Reds.

Slowly but surely move DeRo to short:

Soriano

Roberts

Lee

Fukudome

Ramirez

Hamilton

Soto

DeRosa

Pitcher

Now that's a sexy offense.

Yeah, the Reds are giving up a lot there. Also, in that scenario, I'd start the lineup:

Roberts

Fukudome

Lee

Ramirez

Soriano

Hamilton

Soto

DeRosa

Nothing groundbreaking, but here's the latest from one Orioles insider:

Just talked to my guy via text and here is what he had to say. Take it for what its worth.

He is hearing that there is an offer on the table from the M's that includes Adam Jones and Clement. Says he thinks Bedard will be dealt. Just a matter of time and the right deal.

Roberts will be dealt as well. No timetable, but says he would be suprised if he is here on OD.

Also feels Roberts got the shaft in Mitchell report and that Hendry could careless if he is in Report. Still thinks Pie could be involved in deal. Gallagher definately in deal.

And the other insider:

Thanks, Peace! I heard about the M's too, but it seems AM isn't happy just yet with the offer. The good thing is they think the offer will get better. I am still hearing alot about Roberts and the Cubs but I'm not sure Pie is included. I know Gallagher is in the offer and we want Pie but to my kmnowledge they haven't included him yet. Are you hearing anything about talks with Millar to the Rangers? Nothing serious yet but ongoing conversations.

http://forum.orioleshangout.com/forums/showthread.php?t=56462

The guys at Orioles Hangout are getting a little restless and are always asking for info, so this sounds a little rehashed. I think it's just a matter of time, whether it be Bedard or Roberts first.
