This probably has no truth to it... but at least it provides discussion:

Blockbuster deal going down???

This is from a emailer of mine who also emailed me about the Marquis deal a week before it happened, but he also emailed me the Cubs were getting Renteria last year but that didn't pan out. So here it is take it for what its worth-

This is a move for the ages. The Cubs are in discussion with Boston and Nationals about a blockbuster deal! Here is the scoop-

Cubs get Ryan Church and JD Drew

Nats get CoCo Crisp, Matt Murton, and Ryan Dempster

Red Sox get Sean Marshall, Austin Kearns, Ronny Cedeno, and Wil Ohman

You heard it from Prophet79 first. Remember I tipped you off on the Marquis signing!

I think it's a little too convenient of a deal to be true, but it does have a lot of elements that are true. First, there is nobody in that deal that any of the 3 organizations are particularly attached to. Church, Drew, Dempster, and Murton are probably the 4 biggest, and all 4 of them have been involved in trade talks at one time or another. So it's not like it's unlikely that any of those clubs would give up those players.

At the same time, the Red Sox part of the deal doesn't really match up very well. I think the Nationals are receiving a little too much and the Cubs are receiving a little too much and the Red Sox aren't receiving enough. The only way that rumor would be true is if the Red Sox really have taken a liking to Marshall or Cedeno, which is possible. Also, it's hard to say how much the Red Sox want to get out of the Drew deal. Their desperation might make them be willing to take less.

So I believe this deal is fair enough that I wouldn't be absolutely shocked if it was actually reported, but it also seems contrived at the same time with the amount of players involved. It seems like somebody just took the 3 teams, mixed around their spare pieces, and then declared it a trade. It might be a trade that helps all 3 clubs and it's fair, but trades like that simply don't happen very often.

Also, I believe a lot of people were speculating on the Marquis deal before it went down, so that's not a big point for the credibility of the person.

That's really not a good deal for the Red Sox at all. Why would a team with 6 starting pitchers want another one? And while Drew's contract may be a bit pricey, would they really ditch him for Austin Kearns? Julio Lugo had an awful year at the plate, but I fail to see how Ronny Cedeno would be given the chance to be better, considering the Red Sox will be clear W-S contendors. And not only does Ohman stink, the Sox have one of the best left-handed relievers in all of baseball.

And I'm not sure that's such a hot trade for us, either. Drew is probably an upgrade over Murton, but certainly not $14 million worth of one. And Church's value derives from him being a doubles machine while playing center field; if we're not going to play Pie, he should be included in any deal of this magnitude. Giving up our 5th starter and the guy who supposed to become our 'new' 5th starter also isn't that great a prospect for our rotation, though I'm sure we could pick one of Hart/Gallagher to fill in.

So reading between the lines we are trading 2 position players and 3 pitchers for 2 position players. This makes no sense because that leaves us three bullpen arms short, i don't see how the Cubs can pull this off. Why are we giving up most of the players in this deal?

So,

The Cubs are trading

Murton

Dempster

Marshall

Cedeno

Ohman

For Church and Drew? Not out of the realm of possibility, but that seems like a lot to give up.

Huh.

Why would Boston want those 4 players? Why would Boston need to "shed payroll to afford Lowell"?

I'd like that deal from our end, but there's just no way that's true.

Anyone believe the Sox have a handy couple 25 man roster spots just waiting to be used by our castoffs?
