Taking into account all the rumors/suggestions that have appeared in this forum over the last 3 or 4 weeks, I was wondering if Cubs fans would accept an offseason that looked like this:

1. Sign ARod.

2. Trade DLee and a spare part to LA for Loney and Kemp.

3. Trade ARam and Soriano to NYY for Cano and Chamberlain.

4. Trade Infante, EPatt, Marshall, and Gallagher to Tampa for Carl Crawford.

5. Trade Derosa, Murton, Hill, and Pie to Minny for Santana.

6. Sign Torii Hunter.

That would give us a lineup of:

1. Cano 2B

2. Crawford LF

3. ARod 3B

4. Loney 1B

5. Kemp RF

6. Hunter CF

7. Theriot SS

8. Soto C

And a rotation of:

1. Santana

2. Zambrano

3. Lilly

4. Chamberlain

5. Hart/Prior/Marquis/Dempster/prospect/free agent

Speed, power, defense, pitching. That is a world series team. Wouldn't happen in a billion years, but it would be fun to see.

(I get stir crazy during the beginning of hot stove action...)

extremely hypothetical, what with all the NTC's involved. i don't even want to know what the payroll would be

I'm not aware of very many NTC's... though I know ARam has one. The money would be pretty high, but we'd be exchanging ARam, DLee, and Soriano's contracts for ARod and Hunter, with extensions due for Crawford and Santana.

In 2008, we might go backwards financially, though in the next 4-5 years, the payroll would absolutely skyrocket.

The Cubs need one or two pieces. An overhaul isn't even close to what's needed.

As long as those pieces are large, I agree. But one or two pieces that are nothing but role players won't help put this team where it needs to be.

Probably in 2009 the payroll would skyrocket. 20 million for Santana (and that's being stingy) 18 for Z, 12 for Lilly, 8-9 for Marquis. That's a 59 million dollar starting staff even with a mininum guy with the other spot.

Then you add 30 for A-Rod, 15 for Hunter, 8.25 for Crawford, and Cano being arbitration eligible. That's probably around 55 million for the expensive starting players. So you have 112-115 million right there, and don't even have a bullpen or bench yet. Then in 2010 when the others become arbitration eligible it turns into the Yankees.

That sure would be fun though while it lasted :D

Thank God You're Not Jim Hendry

Right. Because those moves weaken us in what way?

Agreed. The only problem with the hypotheticals is that they are quite unlikely to be accepted by both teams... there's really no doubt that we're a better team after it's all said and done. The money would be tough. But we'd be favorites to win the next 3-4 WSs until we can no longer afford it :)

I know its hypothetical, but I like playing Devil's Advocate

1. OK

2. Not sure if LA would do that. Although they are not smart enough to play Loney and Kemp, I think they know the value that they hold. A 32 year old 1B with declining power and speed that is being paid $10 million (?) a season is not the value they would be looking for

3. Also not sure. I think they are not committed to trading Chamberlain or holding onto him for a player like Cabrera. Don't get me wrong, ARam is a really nice player and Soriano provides good value, but with their contracts (and trust me the Yankees aren't as careless as they used to be) they arent in the same league as Cabrera or ARod. Then again, acquiring 2 potential 40 HR guys under the age of 33 for just Chamberlain and Cano might be enticing.

4. OK, but not sure where Infante adds to the trade.

5. Not in a million years would the Twins take that package.

6. I'd probably rather Andruw Jones in that situation, but ok.

D Lee and a spare part does not net Loney and Kemp. If it did, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Yanks don't do the deal for Cano and Chamberlain, either.

As for NTCs, I think the big three have them, in ARam, Lee and Soriano. Correct me if I'm wrong.

How about stopping at #2?

Soriano

Kemp

A-Rod

Loney

A-Ram

Murton

DeRosa

Soto

Use Pie + Marshall to upgrade the rotation.

That was my thought. Stop at #2. Although I'd probably be happy as a clam if we stopped after #1.

Who is this? Are we talking about the guy who hit 16 HRs and slugged 560 after the all star break?

His second half was equal to a 39 HR season.

Derrek Lee's 2007 = Mark Teixeira's 2006.
