Better looking unis, it's drawing some pub, and hopefully some increased merchandise sales.

Rob Dibble lives down there, and I heard him on XM a while back saying that one of the things that could truly help the Devil Rays would be to build a stadium IN Tampa Bay, instead of out in St. Petersburg.

MLB should move both the Rays and the Marlins out of Florida. Neither one is going to succeed financially in Florida since people in Florida don't seem to care much for baseball. Move one of the teams to North Carolina and one of them to Las Vegas or something.

Miami is fully capable of supporting a major league baseball team. What they need is a new ballpark -- with a retractable roof. It rains every day there in the summer, who wants to drive 2 hours to a football stadium, sit in the rain and watch a team? Get a new ballpark, and things will get better.

As for Las Vegas. The fastest growing city in the U.S. needs a baseball team. There is no way they would not make money and draw well.

I mean seriously, the "Rays"? Anything, well, almost anything, would be better than that. Hell, call them the Floridians. Call them the Oranges. Call them the Hurricanes. Call them the something not related to Florida, because really, since when did the name necessarily have to be associated with the geographical area or the fans. Now you're open to a whole swath of possibilities. Honor the Negro Leagues by using one of their many awesome baseball monikers such as the "Grays" (though I think that one should be used in D.C., cause the 'nationals" is just as dumb a name as 'rays') or the "Monarchs". Please, dear God, something other than a freaking intangible radiant wave of light.

Makes me realize how lucky we are to have classic uniforms. Can't beat uniforms like the Cubs, Dodgers, Yankees, Red Sox, etc...

if they built a stadium in Tampa Bay, everyone would be awfully wet. Fans would probably prefer Tampa

Unless they went with O_O's tennis court on top of a building theme! Build a bridge and put the stadium right in the Bay.

I mean honestly. The Rays. The Tampa Bay Rays. Ugh.

I mean, we can go completely old school on this one, call them the Green Sox. They don't even have to wear green socks. The White Sox don't, at least as far as I can tell because all those fools wear their athletic pants down to their heel like boot-cut levis. Heck, the only time I see White Sox fans wearing white socks is when they have sandals on.

The Palms?

The Sailors?

The Ponce De Leon's?

The Sands?

Something please, something other than the Rays. That's just a slippery slope to "The Humids"

http://blogs.tampabay.com/breakingnews/2007/11/rays-planning-w.html

ST. PETERSBURG - The Tampa Bay Rays are planning a $450-million stadium on the downtown St. Petersburg waterfront site of Al Lang Field.

The new stadium would be positioned so that balls hit over the right-field fence would splash into the water, similar to the Giants stadium in San Francisco.

The new stadium would be open-air, but it could be covered with sail-like material on a cabling system. Some seating areas would be air conditioned.

St. Petersburg voters would need to approve the new stadium because it is public property. The city would attempt to sell the land to the county so it wouldn't have to pay property taxes. The Rays would ask for a longterm lease.

Definitely potential good news for TB fans.

Well, you don't has to call me Ray; you can call me Jay -- oh, wait, someone's using that one already.

I second that motion. Specifically, move the Marlins to North Carolina so the Cubs will come here every year.

Ok, this is bothering me for some reason. I see, Iwamura, Crawford, Kazmir and Pena. Who's the other guy?

There hasn't really been a chance to see if Tampa would support a winning team or not. I think they deserve that chance.

The Miami fans have already proven they won't even support their team in the playoffs. They should be moved, it's a horrible fan base and I don't think a new stadium is the answer. National Van Lines is.

From a linguistic standpoint Tampa Bay Rays sounds terrible. I'm going to refer to them as the Tampa Brays until they change it again.

how about just Tampa Rays since the city is Tampa anyway.

I'd rather they kept at least one of the teams there, preferably Miami. You can't really blame those guys for not wanting to go and support that team given the way their owners have treated it. If they had an owner who wasn't a jackass and would at least attempt to privately finance a stadium and not "Huizenga" the team after a WS, then people might start showing up to games and caring. Miami is a far better market than Tampa Bay, from what I understand.

I used to have this cooky idea that the MLB should equalize the leagues to 15 teams per, until I realized that would cause a scheduling conflict. It went something like move the Devil Rays to Portland or Las Vegas, add them to the AL West, then move the Marlins to the AL East, then move Pittsburgh to the NL East. 5 teams per division, 15 teams per league. I'm not even really sure why I thought it was a good idea... OCD?

I would never support a team that only won championships once every six years! Can you imagine?

Ah, that's what my guess was.

Yes. I don't understand that city's desire to call themselves after the body of water that is next to them, rather than just the actual name of the city.
