“Doesn’t make a lot of sense,” said Chicago Cubs general manager Jim Hendry.

Hendry said the Cubs aren’t interested because they have Aramis Ramirez at third base and other priorities.

“He’s a tremendous player. Anybody would love to have him on their ballclub,” Hendry said. “But we feel great about our third baseman and we’ve committed a tremendous amount of money to three or four long-term contracts. And for the needs that we have, as great as he is, we have to address some other issues. And to tie up that much of payroll, when you already have an All-Star at third base, doesn’t make a lot of sense.”

Hey Jimbo, how about moving him back to shortstop? You don't have an all-star there.

](*,)   :-&

I didn't see any other faces that were appropriate, maybe someone could come up with one that's strangling something.

I really look at this as Hendry playing dumb and not being dumb. He has Lou around to talk to about ARod and he knows darn well he could be moved to SS unless ARod has mentioned that he has no interest moving back to SS.

And that would be Hendry's way of saying, we are not getting into a bidding war for him. We'll spend money on other players this offseason.

Does Hendry want ARod? (I dont see why not). He knows the Cubs will not put out enough money to get him.

Does anyone outside of this board think he can still play SS?

What is this "outside of this board" that you speak of? It sounds strange and frightening.

If Hendry had not have overcommitted on the Soriano contract, it's very possible AROD would be playing for the Cubs next year. Of course, the Cubs probably wouldn't have made the playoffs in '07, but we would have been much more likely to make the playoffs in the future with AROD playing SS or LF for that matter rather than Soriano. Certainly, Hendry did not know at the time that AROD would opt out of his prior contract, but nonetheless..the Soriano contract will continue to handcuff the organization for the next 6 years. So some people hate when Hendry is honest about his intentions. Others hate when he holds his cards close to his chest.

Awesome.

I don't think he's holding his cards close to his chest in this scenario...that's wishful thinking, guys. The organization simply will not take on the AROD contract after committing so much to Soriano.

I just hate Hendry when he does stupid things, and I suspect that people would be a lot more forgiving of his quotes if they believed it was all leading up to some great result. I think too many people doubt that's the case based on past experience.

When has he ever, ever held his cards close to the vest?

I don't think he is here either, simply too much money. It was a more a commentary on that he was bashed in this instance for saying he wasn't interested, while at the same time he would have been bashed for expressing interest in Arod.

Anyone bashing Hendry for showing interest in A-Rod should have their head examined. Personally, I don't know what function is served by keeping secret your intentions in the free agent market. I could see the need for secrecy during trade negotiations.

I find it interesting that people actually think we have a chance at getting Arod even though our ownership is up in the air. I just don't see it as a possibility at all. That's way to much money to hand out with so many things up in the air.

You can't look at it that way. It sucks to say this but, Hendry overpaid Soriano to save his job.

And Lilly, and Marquis, and...

Luckily for him, the NL Central turned out to be weak enough that overpaying all those guys paid off. Luckily for us, Lilly, at least, turned out to be worth the dollars, at least in year 1.

If you're referring to my head banging, it was for the reason he gave, which was "we don't need a third baseman". If he had come out and said " we can't afford him" I wouldn't like it, because of why we can't afford him, but I could accept that answer. I just say his comment as him not even considering the possibility that Arod might be able to move back to SS.

No use arguing with Hendry bashers. He's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

I wouldn't considered him "damned" if he signed ARod to play shortstop.

Is it really that hard to understand that every move has supporters and detractors? Thus, hendry is by definition criticized no matter what he does.
