maybe it was steve kerr who said that. does he not realize there's 2 years & 40 million left on shaq's contract??

i just can't even say any rationale for this move from their standpoint.

This deal is a knee-jerk reaction to the Gasol deal. The Suns are scared of the Lakers, and they should be. Plus, they see that the Spurs are older and the Mavs aren't as good/healthy as they have been in the past. The West is far more winnable than it has been in the past several years.

The thing you have to remember about the Suns is that their best player is no spring chicken. Their window will close soon too. From that point of view, I understand why they are acquiring Shaq.

Plus Shaq is there mostly for defense, not offense.

i almost had a heart attack when i heard the deal on espn radio. i actually had to look it up for myself because i figured there must've been something they were leaving out. they didn't trade shawn marion and another guy for just shaq, right? the guy who can't stay healthy, can't play more than about 2/3 of the game, and has two years of a very high number ($20M per) left on his contract. A guy whose playing style is pretty much the polar opposite of what the suns like to play. couldn't be true, right?

man the sun better win it all now, because if they don't this trade is going to look really, really bad.

The heat must be having a field day.

Weren't they going to trade Marion for Kirilenko in the offseason? That would be a far better trade. For all the reasons you mentioned, Shaq just makes no sense.

Marion for Shaq? That's unbelievable. Unless the Suns have a time machine, I can't see this ending well.

I think they want him to retire and have that free money on the books next year. Shaq can't try and go much longer than this year. His body won't allow it.

Yeah because without Steve Nash Shawn Marion is really good, what with his awesome moves and shot... Oh wait he is good as a result of running and jumping and playing with the best point guard in the NBA.

Wait, you're saying Marion's jumpshot isn't textbook?

I am saying they can plug anybody that is an athelte into that system and they will put up similar, if not better numbers than Shawn Marion has. hell grant Hill is still a better player than him. After his 4 million operations.

You missed it. Completely.

And no, not just anybody can go in there and be the Suns' best defender and rebounder on the league's worst rebounding team. Shaq's averaging less than 8 boards. The best case for Phoenix is that Shaq's lack of production has been due to sheer laziness. If he's been DBZing it and only using 40% of his true power, then they have something. Otherwise...good luck.

Steve Nash came to the Suns for the 04-05 season. Shawn Marion had four full years before that with the Suns (excluding his rookie year) and has had three full years plus this year with Nash.

Before Nash: 19.2 ppg and 9.9 rpg

With Nash: 19.0 ppg and 10.8 rpg

There's an easy argument that can be made that the increase in rebounds is due to the Suns playing an up tempo style and therefore during Suns games there are going to be more shots, more missed shots and subsequently, more rebounds. Sean Marion was a very good player without Steve Nash and nothing changed when Nash came to the Suns. And you're absolutely crazy if you think Grant Hill, right now, is a better player than Marion.

Honestly, I think this makes the Suns a worse team.

The Suns are losing scoring, rebounds and defense by making this trade. Shaq isn't what he used to be not to mention that there may not be a worse fit for another team in the NBA. Shaq can't run anymore and that's what the Suns do. And if the Suns decide to slow it down and not run when Shaq is in there, it will completely change what they do. The Suns are going to be horribly disappointed with this team and I am happy that they made it.

The Bulls should sign Agent 0 and Elton Brand.

Fix something that should never have happened. :(

Both of them will be coming off serious injuries though.

I really don't care. It's better than holding onto Deng and Gordon as if they were Jordan and Pippen part II.

I still like Grant Hill better than Marion. Still. Plus Marion has done nothing but bitch about his role on that team for years. In his mind he should be there best player and number 1 option, in all reality he is easily the third best player on his team. Good riddance, oh and there is a reason all he could fetch in a return right now is a very old Shaquille O'Neal. I just hope the Bulls aren't the team that gives him a big money contract.

The Suns are already selling Shaq jerseys.
