Not a single post about Godbold hitting a thirty footer with a hand in his face to win the OU game? I know it was a middle of the road B12 matchup, but that was about as insane a finish as you can get.

I missed that. I'm happy for OU. They would have been an above average team if Griffin and Longar had been healthy all year. I'm hoping OU can still slip in to the tourney. What's the status on Longar?

IU is beating the piss out of MSU, even without DJ White

Michigan State isn't even close to being top 10 worthy. See the loss to Penn State a couple of weeks ago.

I don't understand there problem, they have the talent. There coach is good, I guess just a bad blend.

I think a hell of a lot of Izzo as a coach, but he's really had some underachieving teams lately in my opinion.

No one ever says this since Izzo is so revered (I like him a lot, too), but Michigan State has been the most underachieving Big Ten team over the past 5-6 years or so.

Hell of a performance by IU tonight considering teh circumstances. They better hope D.J. isn't hurt too seriously.

This will definitely be an interesting week.

I wonder what the resident Illinois fans feel about an IU coaching change. Obviously the feelings towards Sampson are negative, but I wonder if they would almost rather him be there than get someone else.

I think the last IU coaching search is evidence enough that Indiana isn't going to get some top of the line coach in to replace Sampson. I expect it to be Dakich, and I'm fine with that.

Who else did they pursue? I can't remember. I seem to remember them just picking Sampson out of the blue.

What I don't understand is why they can't get a top line coach. I mean, I suppose possible sanctions could be a deterrent, but it's one of the premier programs in the country, and you don't even have big shoes to fill anymore. After Davis and K-Sanc, as long as you don't burn down Assembly Hall, people will be happy.

No one is exactly sure who they pursued. Rumor has it they pursued Rick Pitino and Steve Alford before settling on Davis. But, two years ago, Greenspan played it very close to the vest. Which was good, however bad the final decision was. It's likely he was interested in Kevin Stallings, whom he hired at Illinois State. Probably will be again.

Money is the biggest factor. IU simply cannot afford to pay a coach like some other schools, mainly due to their football failings. However, I doubt the sanctions have much affect. UK got Pitino, Ohio State Matta, etc., while sanctioned.

I doubt Dakich is the next coach beyond interim (I hope; though he'd honestly be an upgrade over the past two coaches when factoring in coaching and ethics).

I'm still trying to figure out how Weber locked up one of the best Soph's in the country from my backyard (Waukegan, IL).

He had mentioned that U of I started contacting him when he was in 7th grade.

he verballed before he had played a game of hisgh school ball.

expect more of the same, though. with all schollies accounted for through 2010-11, nothing for weber to do but spend time in junior high gyms.

it's a luxury to get in on these kids first. illinois does not have near the prestige of a duke, kansas, kentucky, north carolina, or indiana--and i don't expect self, billy g., k, williams, or whoever's gonna be their coach, at any obscure illinois 7th grade games.

the problem with early commits like that is there is plenty of time for things to change. A kid blows up nationally, all the sudden Duke, UNC, or UCLA have some playing time, he starts wondering if there's a bigger stage to play on.... And I'm not saying this to be a dick, nor am I using this a criticism specific to Weber, but early commits essentially have to be re-recruited until that LOI is sent. Don't think for one second Coach K, Williams, Gillespie, Calhoun, Self, Howland, whoever will back off just because a kid orally committed when he was 14.

Longar is back. He's not 100%, but he's back on the court, which is important since OU is about three deep this year.

I would have posted about the Godbold bomb, but I had a game to cover and I was already running late since I had to stay for the end of the game.

For the record, OU inbounds down two with 20 seconds left, and 10 seconds into the possession Big Blake ends up with the ball at the top of the key. No problem, call a timeout and get something set up. So what do we get? Godbold 30 feet out with a hand in his face.

I'm glad that Sampson is in Indiana, but I'm not so sure Capel is cut out for this. Though to be fair to him, most of our players are terrible.

Oh yeah, when will people start to include Jerryd Bayless in the "Beasley, Rose, Gordon, Mayo" foursome? Three straight 30-point games? What a freshman class this is.

yeah, but an early commit has a much better chance of honoring his committment than not. it can't hurt to get kids to verbal early.

generally kids fail to honor early commits when the coach leaves or the school goes under investigation or is placed on some kind of probation.

i feel pretty good about the richmond commit, he seems genuinely excited. plus, both he and his father have already publicly criticized gordon--and he's got a ton of highly-rated players who will be there with him, none of whom play his particular position.

and again, i'm liking what weber has been doing in illinois, he's starting to lock down the state and get kids excited about playing basketball close to home. getting in early and establishing relationships with players that are even older than their relationships with their high school coaches can never hurt.

the 2 kids to watch will be brandon paul and crandall head. imo, they're the top 2 players in the state right now--and that includes seniors like dunnigan and shumpert--even wunderkinds like richmond.

I said that a long time ago, it's in this thread. I probably prefer Bayless to Mayo. Plus Love, Harden, Hummel, etc. Wonderful freshman class.

that is all sorts of awesome. Skiles? SCOTT SKILES?

Skiles would be a great hire.

due to what?

He's a very good X & O guy. He's got deep ties to the Midwest. He's coming off a successful stint for one of the NBA's marquee jobs. He's from Indiana and won a state championship. His NBA pedigree would get him respect among recruits, his Indiana background would get him respect among HS coaches. He lives/lived in Bloomington. As a hard-nosed, disciplinarian, Skiles was meant to coach college.

I seriously doubt this happens as it would require creativity and foresight, both of which IU's administration has lacked.

i think "hard-nosed, coaches the right way" is as overrated in college coaches as it is in short stops, but that's just me

Well, you can certainly be successful many different ways. However, it is much harder to be successful in the NBA with that style; that was my point. Regardless, IU's fan base has been begging for a "hard-nosed, coaches the right way" leader for eight years.

Hey, Ball State's won 2 games in a row! 5-19 (4-8)

Oh yeah, and ND barely escaped Rutgers 71-68 despite a complete stinkbomb from Harangody (he still had 10 and 8 but took 16 shots to get that 10). Tory Jackson, a dynamite point guard, had 17 points, 10 assists and 8 rebounds in his best game as a collegian. 19-5 (9-3). That's not gonna cut it against Pitt, though.

skiles would be an excellent hire, in the mold of a bobby knight. he'd fit right in in bloomington.

i always thought that he'd make a great college coach, although if iu hires him, i hope he's NOT too good.

i think IU fans just want a winner. if Mike Davis had won 20 games a year he'd still be there

Exactly. Scott Skiles is absolutely perfect for Bloomington and the IU job. I wanted him two years ago (I know he was employed, but he's a college coach waiting to get out).

I always thought he'd make for a good college coach as well, but he's going to be immediately thrown in the fire if this is true. Not quite sure if this guy is going to be ready to do that.
