Apparently the Illinois athletic department has issued an apology for some of the fan behavior last night. Just caught the tail end of it on the news.

So when is the IU apology coming for their fan behavior? Im sure they plan on issuing it soon

From the story in the Indystar today:

Indiana fans directed a similar chant toward a referee in its Jan. 26 game against Connecticut. IU public address announcer Chuck Crabb warned the crowd that IU could receive a technical foul. After the game, IU athletic director Rick Greenspan met with student leaders, and Sampson emailed students admonishing their behavior.

IU also taped video board segments in which D.J. White and Lance Stemler asked fans to root for the Hoosiers but respect opponents.

I think that's a lot to be done to try to curb the practice.

The story also mentioned that the referee warned Frazier for the bump, but decided against calling a technical foul for it because he had never called a technical for something that happened before a game, although it was within his discretion to do so.

i don't get why there has to be an apology (other than the intense media attention). yes the "f you gordon" chants were not a good thing, but it was only a small part of the student ticket section, and no one joined in. other than that what is there to apologize for? throwing beads at some guy whose living vicariously through his son and cussing out/flipping off every illini fan in sight in the process??? whatever. the media in this country is a joke. it was not nearly as bad as it is made out to be. Agreed, I think what the attention whore did flipping off the crowd, as a parent, is a hell of alot worse than some college kids heckling another college student.

For what?

The Uconn game? If so, it has already been done. Several of the players did some PSA's that they played on the video board during the game.

What does it matter anyway? IU didn't make them issue a statement.

How about for mister attention whore and his salute to the Illini fans? Class pure class

You don't issue an apology for one fan flipping the bird after being heckled all game. If that were the case, you would have A.D.'s issuing apologies after every Big Ten road game. Come on. Gordon Sr. is probably an attention whore, but if he and his family actually was hit by beads, it's not stunning that he would have something to say on his way out.

For the record I don't think anything I actually saw was out of line. I'm just saying that when everyone in college basketball outside of your fans is blasting you today, it's probably not the right time to complain about class from others.

For all of the Indiana people that were outraged by it, do you remember what you did to Luke Recker when he came back to Assembly Hall 5 years ago? He got the same treatment as Gordon, maybe worse.

I agree with all of that.

I was in attendance for the Recker game, it was very bad.

The Recker treatment was appalling. One of the absolute worst times to be an Indiana fan. He didn't deserve any of that.

Had attention whore daddy not put himself out in the limelight and let his son get the attention, nothing would have happened to daddy dearest, hell nobody would have even known who he was. Daddy dearest put himself out there, had he been a normal parent, it would have just been heckling, but attention whore couldnt let that happen. He got his attention by supposedly being hit with beads, hes probably lucky thats all he was hit with honestly. They both got what they deserved, and daddy got what he was asking for, more attention towards him.

As for the people blasting "us" screw them, they dont even know the story, but they want, and needed something to latch on to and are basically telling half of it. Oh well, just more proof the media is filled with ignorant, uninformed, loud mouth blowhards.

What did he do last night that put himself out there more than a "normal parent"?

He's lucky that he and his family were only hit with beads? Wow. That's just nutty.

He might be a total attention whore and clown but he still has a right to go to the game and see his son play. Unless he is inciting something AT the game (which I don't think he did) he should be kept free from harm. Boo all you want, but you just look like a total nutjob when you say he deserved to be hit with something and is lucky it wasn't worse.

can't wait to cash in on all my bets with friends and teachers.

In response to your earlier question, yes, I'm a huge UNC fan. In response to this quotation, people actually bet against Duke in this game? Much as it pains me to admit it, Duke is probably a better team than UNC WITH Ty Lawson, at least until UNC starts playing some defense. Without him, I'm surprised we were only down by five with a minute and a half or so to go.

Actually, believe it or not, I'm encouraged by this game. It always sucks to lose to Duke, but it seems pretty clear to me that if Ty Lawson had been running the point rather than Quentin Thomas (who really shouldn't be running the show), we would have won. I don't know if we'll win in Cameron, but I still like our chances.

I thought Quentin Thomas played fairly well yesterday, but I agree that Lawson would have been much better. The thing that would help the most, IMO, with Lawson coming back is taking some of the defensive attention away from Ellington and Green.

Really? He was terrible. He had a couple of nice plays, but that was more than made up for with his numerous boneheaded ones, in addition to his complete inability to distribute the ball. As far as the rest of your point, I think that's a definite advantage of Lawson's return, but I don't think it's close to the biggest. The biggest might simply be that Lawson could probably defend Paulus. Plus, I think Lawson's ability to put the ball where he wants it would've helped Ellington and Green as much as diverting defensive attention away from them - they spent the whole night trying to create plays on their own, cause Thomas wasn't helping much.

Anyway, here's hoping Ty's back for the Clemson game, and that we put up a better fight later this season in Cameron.

how is standing up, turning around, and swearing at / taunting fans not inciting?

anyway, hopefully he corrects his relationship with his son or both will need some serious therapy. it is not normal or healthy for a middle aged man to live through his son

Why is that comment so hard to understand? Yes the attention whore is lucky it wasnt worse. There are some crazy sob's out there who dont care that its just college basketball. Im not saying I, myself, would deliver physical harm to the clown, but there are people who would, so therefore he is lucky. Didnt think that comment would be so hard to comprehend.

I think its comical that 2 fans who "threw" beads are making more headlines than a father of a star athlete standing up and giving the middle finger to a bunch of college kids. Pretty sad

This is the last thing I am gonna say on it because really it is tired. Illinois fans are pissed, IU fans think what happened was ok. But, EJSr first announced he was coming to newspapers and was bringing his whole family. Yes this happened it was on the Illiniboard a good three days before the game. Why do that? Were you maybe wanting something to happen. Then when they get there they are wearing black IU jerseys. Again WTF? Aren't IU's colors Crimson and Red? I also love how he stood up every time the EJ had the ball, you know because the booing didn't let him know who had it, so he had to make sure. I thought EJ handled it all pretty well. His dad on the other hand...

That's pretty fair illiniguy. I'm not arguing that the guy loves attention, that was evidenced by the black jerseys.

Keener and jaydee, from everything I had read he didn't flip anybody off or scream at fans until after the game (and after they had stuff thrown at them). If so I don't think he incited anything just by being there and wearing a different colored jersey.

Anyways, big game for the Hawks today at Minnesota. If we want that 6 seed in the Big Ten Tournament we're probably going to have to win today. The problem is that Minnesota forces more turnovers than anyone in the league and we turn it over more than anyone in the league.

I am incredibly psyched up for this ND/Marquette game. With @UConn and a home date with Pitt as 2 of the next 3 games after this, it'd be big to get this one. Let's make it 34 in a row at the Joyce.

Does it matter when he flipped off anybody? Hes a parent, an adult, and if I were Eric Id be beyond embarrassed. And Ive also read that during and before the game he was telling Illinois fans to F off, even fans who came up to him wishing Eric good fortunes.

The media(ESPN) got exactly what they wanted from all this. They constantly tried showing the "feud" and the attention whore, and telling half the story. But hey I bet the next time IU-UI play, there will be people who watch because of ESPN's "show" they tried putting on the other night.

I can't believe the IU/U of I discussion is still going on. But Illini fans....I AGREE WITH YOU! Sr. is a grown man. He should have clearly expected to be heckled along with his son and family. But it was mostly 19 year old kids, man. Get over. Stop drawing attention to yourself. He did so by wearing the black jersey (which are nice btw). He did so by making the statement that the whole family would be there (I don't think they've showeds up in those numbers in Bloomington, 40 miles away from their hometown). Nobody cares about you and they wouldn't know you exist if your son wasn't a good basketball player.

One thing I will take exception to is "it could have been worse". That doesn't excuse the fans actions. Neither Sr. nor Jr. has ever done anything personally to any Illinois fan or player. Just because it's typical for idiot fans to try and make themselves make a difference in a game doesn't mean they should.

I could care less about it now. I am trying to concentrate instead upon the fact that on that night we had the best freshman on the court. Hopefully Weber will see that and start giving him the bulk of the minutes. There is no reason McCamey shouldn't start from this point forward. This season is over. Tisdale needs to play over Pruitt as well. Thanks Shawn, those 3 clutch free throws pretty much were your career in a nut shell.

I like ND, but I couldn't help rooting for Marquette there. I just still can't believe Zeller got Mr. Basketball over James, and for some reason that makes me dislike Zeller. I'm not saying it makes sense, just the way it is.

Why the hell is Gus Johnson stuck in NY doing halftime shows and not doing the Duke-BC game?

It's crazy that McCamey has come off the bench for most of the season. Chester Frazier is terrible, McCamey has a great future.

I have no idea what purpose it served to announce that you and your family are going to a game.

I never said it excused the fans actions, I just said it could have been worse since there are nutjobs out there who take this stuff way too seriously. I was expecting some kind of physical altercation actually, hence why I said it could have been worse.

I agree with everything else you said.

Yea McCamey looks like he could be a real good one by the time he leaves Champaign. Its going to be fun to see him play with some talented players in the coming years.
