The Yankees' decisions in the next couple of months will impact all of baseball. Some of these have been discussed elsewhere, but I thought this could be a good thread to discuss what the Yankees should do as a sort of off-season plan.

First, they need to get rid of Torre. All that money and talent and trips to the playoffs- he obviously can't get it done. Some say they should hire Larussa, but I think they should go for Dusty Baker. It's really the world against the Yankees, so who better to have than Dusty? Remember how he fought so hard against all the negativity from the press when he was at Chicago? AND, the Yankees walk a lot. They need more hitting, less walking. Therefore, Dusty.

They must let A-Rod walk. He's just not a postseason player. Let some stupid team like the Cubs sign him.

Convince Clemens to pitch all year next year. They need pitching and the Rocket could solidify the rotation.

Sign Andruw Jones or Torre Hunter for centerfield for eleventy billion dollars.

I think these moves are somewhat realistic and what I in some ways would like to see them do.

That's not even a real number.

Should make it easier to pay. Pay a pretend amount with pretend money.

According to Scott Boras it is the going rate for those two.

Last night I was listening to a little talk radio, and really enjoyed all the "what the yankees need to do talk." The host was mostly concerned about the lack of an ace, a pitcher who can actually strike guys out. Pretty basic stuff that most people have know about for a few years. One guy called up and was absolutely bowing down to this guy's genius for bringing up something, "he'd never really thought about."

The host also touched on how wrong it is to pick on ARod's numbers, when so many others did even less, and many from the glory years had worse numbers. So a listener had to chime in saying, "yeah, but it always seemed like those guys were coming through with the timely clutch hit." Needless to say, "seemed to" is one of my favorite phrases when people talk about baseball.

Anyway, I could only take about 10 minutes of this before turning it off. But it was quite enjoyable.

Is David Eckstein available? With his laser-rocket arm, he should be able to shift over to third. Get Podsednik and there's your one-two hitters for New York in 2008.

Okay, here's a hypothetical situation for you all to consider. Keep in mind that there is probably NO way this will happen, but I want to see everyone's thoughts.

The Yankees decide it's time to turn the corner and go younger. Derek Jeter is made available in a trade with the Yankees picking up half of his remaining salary. Should the Cubs get involved?

There's no reason to bring this up.

And no. The Cubs would have to give up a boatload of talent for a declining middle infielder who is going to turn 34 next year, and would be on the hook for 3/30, and most likely a large extension.

But again, there's no point in even bringing this up.

I don't understand why Torre should be fired. The team makes the playoffs every damn year, and that's really all you can control. You can blame him for what happens over 162 games, but not over 4. I'd fire Cashman first for overpaying so many players. He could easily get more for less money.

How about $Texas?

What is that from? I can't think of it for the life of me.

Sorry, I thought this was a forum for discussion. Didn't mean to offend your sensibilities. It was a simple question.

You didn't offend anything, it's just pointless to bring up the idea of the Yankees trading Jeter. There might be 100/1 odds against the Cubs getting ARod, but at least with him, there's good reason to discuss it, he's available and the Cubs can afford him (and do need him). Jeter isn't anywhere close to available. And the only possible way he could become available is if the Cubs foolishly traded away way too much to get him.

He wouldn't be fired, his contract is up, and in theory he wouldn't be brought back.

The reason he should be let go is because George is crazy. The theory is it's WS championship or bust. If you get 95+ wins practically every year and make the playoffs, I find it hard to find fault in the manager. Yes, the payroll is ginormous, but it's highly flawed. Jeter ain't worth $22m, Clemens isn't close to being worth what he's paid. Damon and Giambi aren't earning their keep. Mussina and Pettite are overpaid. If Torre never won a WS in his 12 years, I could see the complaint, but 4 WS in 12 years is insane, let alone the average of 97.75 wins per season, and 6 AL pennants.

It's very rare for any institution to maintain the same leadership for 12 years, so in theory, there's some sense in letting him go. But there's clearly no dying need.

Speaking of Johnny Damon, if you saw this guy take BP and try to throw a baseball with authority, you'd probably pick him last if you were playing a pickup game.

As long as we're talking about the Yankees, let's get back to the "Dempster to the Yankees" speculation from last year. Dempster wants to start, the Yanks need starters. Rivera might leave, Dempster has experience closing. While we're at it, package Marquis and Dempster to the Yanks.
