1984 was by far the worst. The Cubs had a great team, it was stacked on offense, 6 guys with 80 or more RBI, a nice blend of speed, power, and OBP. A deep pitching staff and a lock down closer.

They lost to a flakey Padres team that laid down like the dogs they were once they got to the WS against Detroit. That was the biggest pain I've felt as a Cubs fan. Although 2003 hurt, but that team had a very shaky bullpen, so I don't know that they really underachieved when it was all said and done. In '89 and '98 they just lost to far superior teams. This year, was an inconsistent team with 85 wins and a lot of holes.

Definitely 2003. That year they should have made it to the World Series (just like they should have in 2004). This year they shouldn't have.

This one hurt more, because I was 16 in 2003 and stupidly thought we'd be making our way back all the time. This year I don't have that same feeling about the future.

So, 2007 hurt more but only because I was a dumb kid in 2003.

This hurt because the Cubs should have won.

2003 was devastating because the Cubs had it won.

I'm not sure we should have won is accurate. We were an inconsistent 85 win team in a bad division. Arizona was a 90 win team in a good division. I know the pythags pointed toward us, but we weren't a great team. We were a slightly above average team prone to streaks and slumps. The euphoria of the week or so leading into the playoffs surely had gotten my hopes up, but really no one should have thought the Cubs should have won anything this year. We weren't that good.

The 2003 team was a much better team and a team that should have won.

That one stung...big time. This one I'm more pissed about because I was able to fly all the way to Chicago to see it unravel, but in reality there was much much more pain here than 2003.

I truthfully can't see how anyone looked at the 2007 Cubs and expected them to do anything in the postseason. They were not good enough.

2003 blows all of these away.

2003 had the bonus of looking like a launch off point for some great years, but it still hurt a heck of a lot more. This was more embarrassing, but it didn't hurt. It was expected. The 2007 Cubs weren't good. And while the offenses were similar, the 2003 pitching staff actually had guys you thought could almost win on their own. The current pitching is good, but it's far from lockdown and highly suspect.

Anyway, going into the postseason I was hoping for 5 wins. Obviously a World Series would have been ideal, but I thought it was completely unrealistic. The Cubs just looked like crap against every NL contender, and I was hoping they wouldn't look that bad. Unfortunately, they did. But as I said, completely expected.

1984- It was such a fun season and the Cubs had what looked like enough to win it all

2003- for reasons previously stated

1989- I had very low expectations but I also lived with 2 Sox fans who were glued to every second of the NLCS and let me know what happened. I don't think I even watched the last 2 games of the series.

2007- same as 89 except that there are no Diamondback fans- anywhere.

2003, they were five outs from the World Series.

2007, they were seven games from the World Series.

Not even close on the pain scale. 2007 was like a rugburn compared to the amputation of 2003.
