I found this interesting rumor. Bay is coming off of a down year, but is certainly a power-hitting corner OF. Can he play RF? What kind of package would the Pirates want?

Pirates open to trading OF Bay?

Pirates president Frank Coonelly was asked if the Pirates would consider a Colon-type trade by moving a premium piece such as outfielder Jason Bay, who is due $13.25 million the next two seasons at a position where the team has growing options. "You have to remember the team in Cleveland at that time was much different than the team we have here," Coonelly said, referring to the Indians' old age and high payroll. "Having said that, I think every team, particularly in a market like Pittsburgh, has to acquire as much premier talent as possible. One way to acquire premium talent is via trades of veteran players for younger players, so that is an avenue I expect Neal will certainly consider. But that's not saying anybody's going to look to trade Jason Bay this offseason, because we're not in the position Cleveland was in." -- Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Unless they think there's more to this down year than just a down year, I would think they'd hold onto him for anything short of a huge package. He was on his way to perennial all star status, and not just as the required lone representative of the Pirates. He's affordable, and provides plenty of bang for the buck (although not at this year's pace). I could see them having interest in a package like Murton, Gallagher/Marshall and Colvin. But really, there isn't much motivation unless they can get multipe ready to start and contribute in a positive way right now, players in return, for far less money.

Bay can play RF. Not a great OF, but shouldn't be a problem. Pirates have pretty glaring needs. I think they will look for 3B, C, and obviously pitching. Cubs can't really help out at 3B and C, but I could see the Pirates being interested in all the close to the majors pitching that the Cubs have.

Swing a three-way. Murton to someone, our pitching to pittsburgh and a C or 3B from the other team to the pirates.

I think they hope Neil Walker can take over at 3B, possibly as soon as next year. Interesting rumor I'm hearing around here is that the Pirates are gonna go after Troy Glaus. They actually tried to get him at the deadline this year.

I think Bay is actually probably gonna get traded. Strangely, the radio commercials completely don't mention him. "Adam Laroche, Freddy Sanchez, Jack Wilson and the Pirates take on......" No substance to this, just a hunch.

Soriano

DeRosa

Lee

Ramirez

Bay

Soto

Pie

Theriot

I don't care how many righties that has, sign me the f up.

Also, Bay can actually steal a bag or two, which gives him an upgrade over most players of his style.

Using this rumor and speculation from other posters, by trading packages involving players such as DLee, Marshall, Gallagher, Cedeno, Murton, Patterson, Fontenot, and a few other young pitchers, the Cubs could end up with this lineup:

Soriano LF

Renteria SS

Bay RF

Ramirez 3B

Loney 1B

Kemp CF

Derosa 2B

Soto C

Theriot Utility IF

Possibly offer Pie in a package deal for a solid young starting pitcher.

While I would hate to lose players like DLee and Murton, I would think this lineup would certainly be contenders.

I traded Murton, Jones, and Ohman for Bay earlier this season in MLB 07'.

What?

Huh?

What do you mean it doesn't work that way?

Yes huh it would work!

Okay, never mind. :P

Why would they need a catcher? Ronny Paulino doesn't work? Also, why wouldn't Sanchez move back to 3B and have them take E-Patt?

Ever seen Paulino hit when the Cubs aren't the opponent? Well, neither has the Pirates organization. Also, Freddy Sanchez doesn't hit like a 3B. It only makes sense to keep him there if you have Chase Utley or the like at 2B.

I do think the Pirates could have interest in Eric Patterson. They have been looking for a leadoff type hitter for a while. EP can play 2B (moving Sanchez to SS) or CF.

I'd offer Patterson, Gallagher and Marshall for Bay and a P prospect.

Would the Pirates consider a package of Murton, Marshall, Marmol, and a minor leaguer for Bay?

I like Bay as much as the next guy, but that package seems like too much.

Take out Marmol and it works.

Yeah, take Marmol out of the package. Marmol should be untouchable this off season.

Not for the Pirates it doesn't.
