My understanding is that things, but not people, can be oriental. For example, rugs from Kashmir can be called oriental. But people from Kashmir are Asian, not oriental.

It's nondiscriptive and has pejorative canotations.

 

It's still in use in geogrpahy. Oriental = East, Oxidental =West. Where those terms came from is beyond me.

 

They are derivations of the latin terms for East (oriens meaning "east" (lit. "rising" < orior "rise") and West (occidens meaning "west" (lit. "setting" < "occido" "fall/set").

 

Interestingly enough, it is only a perjorative term when refering to a person and only really here in North America. It is still common and not offensive in Europe, even the UK.
