Colin Cowherd (of all people) made a good point about Carr's overall record. Some are defending him because his overall record is good, but he's lost 4 straight bowls, is under .500 against top 20 teams, etc. Longevity and beating up weak non-con and bottom feeder Big 10 teams will make your record look awfully good

The Wolverines are 2-8 the last five years in the final two games of the season (i.e., Ohio State and bowl game). That's pathetic and unacceptable for a program of Michigan's ilk.

I wonder how a lot of teams would have done playing OSU and then a bowl game record wise though. IMO, the OSU coach has Carr's number just as Carr had the previous OSU coaches.

For many many years Michigan and OSU led the Big 10 and ran up scores of victories on the rest and once in a blue moon one of the other 8 would have a career year and win the Big 10. I agree that with their resources they should always be a top 25 team but they have to be careful and not fall into the Alabama (Bear) trap and go crazy firing coaches too quickly once Carr is let go.

USC with a week off before the Nebraska game, how do they do when they have a bye like that?

They lost to Texas in the Rose Bowl after a long break and lost to Oregon State after a bye last season.

That defense will eat up Keller, whether the game is in Lincoln or not.

They also pounded Michigan after a long break last year.

I'd say USC takes it by 3 touchdowns.

Well yeah, but that goes without saying. I was looking for their losses over the past few years and which ones were with a week off. Their only other loss in the past 2 years (UCLA) wasn't with a week off.

Pete Carroll does a great job of getting his team prepared and if you give him another week, it makes it all the better. Sam Keller looked rather shaky at times last week and that USC front 7 is going to eat him up. That's a NASTY defense.

I agree. I've argued basically the same thing: two of Michigan's bowl losses are to USC in the Rose Bowl and another was a barn-burner to Texas, the year before they won the title, in the Rose Bowl. USC basically doesn't lose games, and Texas lost (I think) one game (to Oklahoma) over a two-year stretch. Also in the stretch is a loss to a National Champion OSU team, and another runner-up OSU team. So, it's not like they've been beaten by poor teams in those 8 of 10 losses. Still, I doubt that is much consolation to Michigan fans.

I've heard Les Miles may take the Michigan job if Carr is fired. I'd hate to see him leave LSU.

It sure as heck would start a chain reaction of coaches leaving for better jobs.

You might get what you need and want but what about the poor Tiger fans who seemed to be getting popped on for some reason? That seems like a sweet job and it just makes me wonder why people leave there so soon.

Bad luck is all. Saban is a douche and Michigan is the best job in the country outside of SC.

Miles attended the University of Michigan, where he was a two year letterman under legendary Coach Bo Schembechler in 1974-75. In 1980, Miles returned to Michigan as an assistant coach to Schembechler

I might feel bad for Vance for about 2 minutes. Then I'd realize that Lloyd Carr is finally gone and we now have a good coach in place for years to come.

Hmm, maybe so. Best jobs in college football, yeah Michigan is in the top 5 no doubt about that. I'd put Texas, OSU, ND and Florida in there too.

I'm curious where you'd rank the PSU job. It hasnt' been available in 40+ years, so it's tough to gauge. Will top coaches be clamoring for it when JoePa finally retires?

It will never open up. Joe Pa is a robot.

I sure as heck wouldn't want that job after he leaves. The mans an icon. It is a sweet job though with their wonderful support and being in a good conference it would be an attractive team for any coach in the nation. I'd put it in the top 10.

USC

ND

Michigan

Texas

OSU

Florida (That area is so loaded with talent)

Next tier:

LSU

Penn State

Oklahoma

Tennessee

Alabama/Florida St

I think tradition of winning, support, area of where they play are the most important aspects of these jobs.

i've often said that PSU's best tactic to deal with JoePa's leaving would be to have a coach picked ahead of time and just announce the new hire at the same press conference as the JoePa retirement. Let JoePa help pick his successor, whether that be internally or externally. I also think the new coach should have some ties to PSU (or at least to the area).

my darkhorse would be Bill Cowher, but that's just a pipe dream

I think Cowher would be a great college coach, a great one.

Yes, Pennsylvania is a very good state to recruit in as well as the east coast surrounding states. Its a big time program in a good location.

As for Miles i wouldnt believe it but for his ties and the contract he signed with LSU that he has an out to go to Michigan. Michigan is great program but a lot of their success depends on out of state recruits. LSU is more sustainable because the state is loaded with talent and LSU is the only other major conference school in that state. If UM slips they dont have the luxury of relying on top notch in state recruits who want to stay locally. Michigan is just above average for HS football, its getting better but its not Texas, Cali, Florida, Ohio or Lousiana.

Don't worry. It'd open up a spot for Nick Saban to come back. He'll be pretty close to time to switch jobs after this season anyway.

I'm sure he'll take some of the credit if they win the NC this year.
