What about John Olerud?

Olerud was a seriously above-average fielder too, if I remember correctly. That's a good one.

How about Darren Daulton? 113 OPS+, and three AS appearances to show for it.

Olerud was one of the best defensive 1B that I have personally seen.

Placido Polanco seems weirdly underrated considering his batting average.

And as a bonus he got really good once he left the Cards.

I was just about to post him...

Darren Daulton made me think of Gregg Jeffries. Unfortunately, after bringing up his BR page it appears he's more qualified for the "Lucky Cards players" thread than the "most underrated". It also makes me think of "You're a 5, Jeffries! A FIVE!"

How about Andy Van Slyke?

I remember that from my Daulton spaceman GRB thread. That Jefferies anecdote never gets old.

How about Andy Van Slyke?

Another guy who is underrated considering his defense.

Just for oldcubsfan..........

Ben Grieve!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But seriously, right now one of the more underrated players in the game to me is Matt Diaz. Tampa cut him, the Royals picked him up and traded him to Atlanta for a minor leaguer. All the guy has ever done is hit.

And you want to tell me that the Kansas City Royals didn't have room in their outfield for a guy like Diaz?

Extend it 5 years so we can use Gene Tenace.

Other than that....how many of you knew that Carlos Guillen was better than Derek Jeter?

It's been pretty obvious that Guillen is at least his equal, and a cursory look at the numbers tells you Carlos is better.

Guillen - 23, 8, 26, 18 WS

Jeter - 26, 26, 33, 20 WS

Guillen - 102, 42, 107, 89 RC

Jeter - 99, 106, 138, 97 RC

Guillen is underrated for sure but he still hasn't been as valuable as Jeter over the last 4 years partially because of the fact he gets banged up some every year but also because OBP is more valuable than SLG and Jeter has had close to .400 OBP over the past 3 years.

You are giving credit to Jeter for playing on the Yankees. Good job. Believe me I can shove this down your throat if I wanted to. But I am a changed man, I am going to be nice. The simple fact of the difference in counting stats like that is PA. On a PA basis Guillen's been better for three years. Jeter bats a lot more because of the team/manager he plays for.

Im just throwing this out, I wonder what everyone thought. Probably just because of his injury problems, but Larry Walker is one the best player, healthy, I have seen play. I just kind of think no one will be talking about him 20 years from today, but not only was he an amazing hitter, but he was an outstanding outfielder with a rocket arm.

those who don't know much about him will point to his years in Colorado and say the thin air elevated his stats

Similar to Kirk Gibson in my book. Yes Walkers numbers are better but he played in a extreme hitters park in an extreme hitters era. I think Gibson was on his way to being a baseball afterthought until his HR in the WS against Eck.

Bobby Bonilla -- .279/.358/.472

Wally Joyner -- .289/.362/.440

There are two guys that were very good players when I was growing up that no one ever really talks about. Very underrated, in my opinion.

Injuries seemed to have had really destroyed him. Seemed to be a great athlete. Wonder what kind of football player he would have been. Probably would have only lasted a couple of seasons.

this will make me feel ashamed...but john kruk was a very good baseball player. but no one knows him for that, they know him as the obnoxious dumbass loudmouth on espn, and rightfully so.

Joe Carter-Sure, he didnt hit much for average, but he had 10 100 RBI seasons.

Glenallen Hill.

I mean seriously, he hit a ball on top of a building.

He hit a homerun while in the process of stepping into the batter's box.
